I need to get his book. That part about the Juilliard school still goes on today & pisses me off. Music theory is low key based off white supremacy..white folks who couldn’t feel & express themselves through music created a whole bunch of rules that they say you have to follow if you’re a true musician.
fukk all that I’m so glad HBCU bands, blues musicians, funk bands and them New Orleans brass bands threw that shyt to the bushes and created our own lane.
Weird take on music theory. Especially as Jazz's musicians are considered to be the most advanced musicians, from a theory and technical aspect, and Jazz is considered to be the first modern music of the New World. There is no form of music held in higher regard.
And without reading more of that except, it doesn't sound like actual theory was an issue there, other than typical fukking ignorance and treating black music like a monolith.
The fact is, jazz is so advanced, and existed so fully outside of the world of traditional music, the academic realm were bullshytting and playing catch-up for decades in their processing of it.
This is a period of time where what you thought was possible in music was changing weekly, but you still had the old pillars of society trying to keep their air of expertise.
But ultimately, to try and put music theory and jazz at opposite ends is madness. You can't be great at jazz unless you know you're shyt. And these dudes know if you know your shyt or not within seconds.
