I'm in the final year of an honour's degree in history and my student debt is $14,000, levied at 0% interest, and I don't have to make a single repayment until I report a weekly income of $1,100 to the tax office
if I never report an income that meets the threshold or if I move overseas permanently, I don't have to pay a cent of it
My debt would be even less if I hadn't failed a few classes and had to retake them. If I passed everything first go I would have owed under $11k. shyt, I've saved enough to pay off my debt twice over, lump sum single payment, in the seven years I been at uni
America lost with its neoliberal education model :nyclost: our system of government subsidised student loans means that to some extent, we can pursue our passions at university, instead of being forced into bullshyt B. Commerce and B. Petrochemical Engineering degrees that nobody really wants to do for any reason other than its not financially viable to study anything else because loans.
The best system is in Denmark. It's 100% free there, so you can go and study whatever it is that grabs your interest, without having to worry about economic pressures - which is the way education should be everywhere in the world.
