I was interviewing for a job at Level 3 Communications in Atlanta. This was as i was preparing to leave my job as a Network Operations Tech for Sprint.

Anyway i basically kinda overstated my knowledge of a certain type of equipment. I had some experience with it but very limited. Anyway from that point on if i list something on my resume i dont put to the extent that i know it unless i know it rather well. If it's on there and i have had limited exposure/experience i jsut say so during the interview.

Right now im trying to get a new job and i want more experience with VMWare. I have built servers on vmware before but wouldnt call myself a guru so on my resume i stated that i have vmaware experience. In my interview i would just state what ive done in terms of builds and administrative tasks with VMWare but not gonna say im an expert

Also never take an offer until you make a counteroffer.

Never take an offer until they have sent you a formal job description...not that bullshyt that was in the advertisement you responded to

Companies love to slip all sorts of extra responsibilities in after.....

Have a discussion with them about it.....the metrics you will be evaluated on etc...

GET WHAT YOU WANT IN WRITING......NONE OF THAT BULLshyt WE CAN DISCUSS THIS LATER NONSENSE
This is some decent advise but only applicable if you already have a job.

IT is basically one of the worst field you can do this in The best you can do is exaggerate your years of experience.

Once they ask you those basic questions that have you goin :merchant: it's a wrap

I would really hate to be in interviewer for an IT position. You could legit be a good employee with a bad memory. I know I rely on looking stuff up so my test scores are never that great. But I know what kind questions to ask..and people know that it's all about knowing how to answer your own questions. But it'd be silly to hire somebody over somebody who knows it off the dome

In IT you can only be good with stuf you use fuctionally every day

There is too much stuff to be an expert on most of it

If you feel you must spill your guts like some gushing teenager about your skills...simply state which technologies you use regularly.

Stay away from stating expert, beginner, blah blah....

If they wanna know let them ask it in the interview

@FSP breh even when you dont have a job already you have to be prepared to negotiate

Negotiate for jobs, negotiate for raises, negotiate for terms of your contract.....

I am not trying to say be an a$$hole but you have to advocate for yourself

That's why I took stuff about AWS out of my resume. I had to use it for a group project I was doing, but I personally never used it. I wrote like 99% of the code and then one of my other group members took care of that sort of administrative stuff. Out of all of the stuff on my resume, recruiters were sending me positions regarding AWS EC2. I had to put the :whoa: on 'em revise my resume. Now if they want to ask me about C#, Java, and .NET then we're in business. I love the .NET Framework:ahh:

I was doing a phone interview and the guy sounded good so I told the hiring manager "let's bring him in for a face to face."

:obama:

Manager was like "naw let's hire him."

I was like :whoa:

Dude hired him. :snoop:

A week on the job and the Guy barely knows how to enable services in Windows and create accounts in AD. And he's supposed to be a lvl 3 admin.

Come to find out his home boy did the phone interview and he just showed up.

But in the interview highlight the fact that you wrote code that had to at some point interface with AWS...(or at least I think that is what you are saying)

We made a web service, so the back end was hosted on an EC2 instance. As far as running the server-side code and setting up continuous integration, my team member did that. In hindsight I probably should have gotten some experience with that since a lot of companies are taking advantage of AWS, but the rest of my experience is sufficient.

How big of a difference did it make in the big picture? Would he have been miles ahead of other candidates or would it have made a relatively small difference?

Sorry I thought I had replied but I guess I zoned out .

Honestly it would have been neglible difference

I don't know if he had a short resume and was struggling to fill up the page,,
or maybe he was overestimating the competition and felt desperate

It was strange

I'm at the point to where, I don't need to lie and I have to do very little embellishing, not to mention that I have people that can vouch for me as far as working and what I've done. I'm at the point where I interview with director level people. Next job up will be interviewing with VP level and above. I've had leadership positions. I've been in charge of departments, my Excel skills are en fuego, etc... I just show up to an interview and perform in that mufukka brehs.

Breh I actually really appreciate the advice you're giving so no offense taken

I'm just starving for a legit full time right now I don't know if I could bring myself to push the envelope like that if someone decided to hire me.

Think about if they decided to not hire you afterwards because your demands were too high. Now I look like the dumbass:snoop:

But I've been on the ropes for so long I'm :hamster:. If I had options I'd be behind you 100%.
