I think what you're talking about is more so "American" Christianity. (I'll explain later what I mean by that). And even in that I don't agree with "just accept Jesus" phrase. I think you have to look Christianity world wide religion which started in the Middle East (and not the White Man's religion but that's a whole nother thread). For example, in many countries around the world it's pretty much a death sentence. You publicly announce you're a Christian and you could receive severe persecution (i.e. India, some countries in Africa) at the very least. And at the most death. Even early Christianity you could get thrown to the Lions den. Go to less liberal Muslim country and see what happens when you say Jesus is Allah. In China where there are many Christians (many people are unaware of that, not saying you) they have secret churches.

Now, as far as "accept Jesus". That's American jargon, easy believism. Biblical Christianity calls for a radical change of lifestyle where you deny yourself, sacrifice, love your enemies (which in my opinion is Top 3 hardest thing to do as a Christian). It's not about saying some magic words and boom, He accepts you. You have to be willing to love him above all.

Listen to the stories of many people in the church. They basically had never been shot in their life, many of them. Perpetual losers and can't get rights. All they had to do was accept jesus as their lord and savior and suddenly they had a respectable brotherhood. Yeah, they're not "supposed" to curse, or drink, or fornicate, but aye, even if they do they can ask the lord for forgiveness!

We see the truth differently, I see generations of enslaved people who eventually lost their original languages and beliefs while enduring UNSPEAKABLE terror and atrocities at the hands of white slavers.Remnants of those culture(s) survived..merged with those of other Africans and helped form a composite culture but for the most part language and religion were forced upon enslaved people who lead miserable lives. You also have to imagine that many felt that their Gods had failed them also.

If holding on to a glimpse of some rest in the afterlife helped people to SURVIVE lives as slaves then that's what it was. Standing safely in the 21st century and calling them cowards is not "acknowledging the truth" no matter what. It helps complete your narrative but I totally disagree.


I can't scroll through facebook because I'm not on it, but I've seen and heard the comments you referenced in real life. If you're criticizing modern day Black folks who think like this..I'm down for calling them out. They have freedoms and can make choices that decide their lives and need to take ownership of that. I think that's more a function of who those people are than what religion they follow though. Most Black folks in the Americas are Christians of some sort, but not everybody falls into the "sit around and do nothing and pray my problems away" category. Civil Rights Bills, fought for primarily by Black clergyman(Christians) wouldn't have passed if that were the case
