Homosexuality in Hip-Hop :dame: was Tyler the first to come out on record? Is this a new beginning or the end?

He's the first openly bisexual mainstream rapper. And he makes great music. Maybe not a barometer in the flabby world but he is one of the post 2010s legends
His fanbase is “other” tho….. it isn’t the base that decides what’s dope in hip hop….his angle is to entertain the “forgotten, different” hip hop fan that never felt they could identify….to them and cacs Tyler is a legend, but to most hip hop fans he a weirdo

Nah Tyler is popular among white frat boy types. He doesn’t have black women and you black males which are the ones that dictate what’s hot.

The hottest artist don’t sell out arenas like that because their fans can’t afford shows and they haven’t built up that type of following yet

He isn’t nerd rap, he’s in an alt rap type space.
White frat boy types. Where? White frat boys are listening to Lil Baby largely. I think part of the problem with this convo is people are stuck in some past year when rap wasn't the defacto dominant genre, so all the stereotypes are old. It's not just hood nikkas, white frat boys, white girls, and ratchet black chicks who all listen to different shyt. All those groups have diverse subsets, there are entirely new groups as well...and there's a lot of overlap with listening habits in the streaming era where there is no barrier between the consumer and anything.

All black people aren't hood nikkas or ratchet chicks. All white boys aren't frat boy types. There's a segment of white chicks who been on Kevin Gates before most black people. There are hood nikkas who almost entirely just listen to their local shyt. There's an oddly large group of young black chicks who really fukk with Cole and Kendrick. And there's a huge group of alternative black rap fans who listen to all type of shyt including Tyler...and Baby...and Carti. Point being people been putting folks in boxes and overlooked that we're in a massive rain forest with all types of diversity because of how big rap is today.

Listening to the album I didn't get that impression. It's certainly more of a rap album than his previous album though, but the production choices don't scream mainstream. Do they to you? There are two tracks at the beginning with trappy 808s but the drums are the opposite of where most mainstream rap shyt has been. And the rest of the album is very....well, Tyler, production wise.

What is the culture. No one can really explain it. I hear Joe say it all the time but much of the stuff he says is "the culture" is shyt I'd imagine you don't think is "the culture."

Got nothing to do whether Lil Baby is or isn't. Him and Durk are arguably the most popular rappers for college kids and that includes a lot of white boys.

No it wasn't lol. CMIYGL was a Gangsta Grillz mixtape which only the minority of mainstream, or older, knows about. You think he was trying to reach mainstream Black Hip-Hop with songs like this?

No with features from 42 and youngboy

He still is going to have songs for his core

This is a mature discussion

That’s implausible, especially here. Take a look at some of the comments when Isaiah Rashad got exposed last year. Also despite his name being brought up a lot in this thread, dudes just won’t admit how hip hop Tyler is. He is arguably one of the best rappers we’ve had this decade but they prefer to overlook him.

I'd say being embraced by Pharrell, Lil Wayne and DJ Drama is existing in the culture :stopitslime:
Kanye, Freddie Gibbs and Maxo Kream as well but nah hip hop doesn’t know him.

Rashad was exposed for being on the down low which is frowned upon in every community

It was his Stans trying to make excuses for. That was a really weird time

I knew you were going to say that. Nikka those are two songs :martin:and they still sound like Tyler.

A "clear attempt" would have been him doing a video at Youngboy's house, seeing him in pictures with Durk, social media drama, more features with mainstream artists, etc.

He still was reaching for black fans with those songs and this project.

I don’t know how else to say it. We have not seen a gay rapper thrive in this culture
