I’ve never been to Texas before; never really heard anyone from Texas speak in a one on one type convo- admittedly; I wouldn’t know the difference. No family in the south coming up so never had a reason to visit that region. The furthest that I’ve been south as an adult Is North Carolina. Been to Georgia, and Florida once as a baby though. But that’s about it. Been an northeast dweller about 99.5% of my life. Is Maryland considered Northeast? (Been to LA one time as a teenager, had a bad experience and never went back).

Maryland is east coast to us.
And we don't claim NC as the south (even though many people do)

It's the same in other cities

I'm in atl I meet nyers all the time some of them have thick accents some it only comes out with certain words

Hell some of these folks from the south don't have stereotypical southern accents until they say certain words. Think it just depends on where and how you were raised, who you grew up around etc.

I dont really have a strong Midwestern accent but it comes out sometimes

Because dumbass out of towners have this ignorant stereotypical concept of a New York accent. Not including the fact that people from different boroughs, backgrounds, ethnicities and educational backgrounds can cause the accent to vary. Depending on who your family or associations are, influences how we talk as well. There’s a lot that factors in. Queens is not going to sound like Brooklyn, Manhattan has a different dialect from The Bronx. Queens NY had the label of talking more “proper”. Staten Island is all those Italian/mafioso nasally accents from tv that people use as reference for whatever reason - think all of New York is like that bc they don’t live life off the computer. Black people don’t talk like Italians. Out of towners Watching a “hood vlog” and think we’re all on that “yo ayo dun” shyt - male and female.

The actors/actresses definitely use vocal coaches, dramatic training and receive training to adjust their accents altogether so that’s not a good example to use anyway. Why would you think entertainers are representative of people, duh- that’s a false comparison.

Reading this in an Italian NY accent makes it funny :lolbron:

Connecticut is part of what they call the Tri State (CT,NY,NJ) It’s metropolitan New York so the influence will be visible. At the same time you also have some parts of CT where they sound like people from Baahston and Rhode Island. Geography plays a big part.
The same way white New Yorkers don’t sound like black new Yorkers is also the same way white Bostonians don’t sound like black Bostonians, it kills me when people do this. I get asked if I’m from 2 places when I leave mass and go down south or out west. New York or Toronto

Tell me how cousin stizz sound like he fresh out from Boston

Example Eddie Murphy

Another example is Marlon Wayans he had a super thick new York accent in Mo money then it seemed as his career progressed he lost it
I'm not sure if it's like that everywhere, but I've taken speech classes at a different couple of colleges, and most of the time they'll try to get people to lose their accents, particularly New York and super country accents. As an actor, a public figure, over time, I could this happening. :yeshrug:
