How Do You Build a Contender Around Josh Giddey? [Coli GM Discussion]

What is the ceiling for a Josh Giddey lead team?

  • Top 4 in the Conference and Contending for Championships

  • 5th or 6th Seed at Best; Annual 2nd Round Exit

  • Perennial Play-In Tournament Team; Annual 1st Round Exit

I think him, coby and Buzelis can be a interesting core going forward if they find a center who isn't a sieve.

Now I didn't say good but it would interesting and possibly good :ehh:
Zach Collins is already on the roster
:manny:

He's much better than Vuc in PnR defense and the team looked fine with Vuc missing games recently. He's not someone you bank on as a core piece of course, but it's a data point on the type of skill set that would match well for them moving foward.

Chicago don't have much of a choice. The alternative is being in the NBA cellar for some more years.
They had a choice. Being in the NBA cellar for the 25 and 26 draft was an option.

A future with Matas and 2 top 5 picks in the next 2 years could have meant adding a combination of guys like Flagg, Harper, Bailey, Edgecomb, Fears, or Jakucionis this year and then AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Boozer, or Arenas in 26....

This was actually a GREAT time and opportunity to be at the bottom. They chose a completely different path. Their 1st Round pick was top 10 protected this season and I believe top 8 or 6 next year... They literally had all the incentive in the WORLD to bottom out to keep their pick in 2 loaded drafts.

I get that nothing is guaranteed with the draft or with young prospects, but is the core of Giddey, Coby and Matas better for the future than any of the potential cores that could have came to fruition from above? Especially now when their back court will now be making more than 70M when they pay Coby and Giddey.

Do you prefer this way of building out a roster or what Washington is doing right now?

So, I made that response for 2 reasons... One is that y'all already have Giddey (for now. Haven't agreed to terms for a new deal) and Chicago is tired of being in the cellar; wants a championship team.

With that logic, the Wizards should have been out of the cellar a long time ago, but only have been relevant a few times in my lifetime; never close to being a contender. Tanking isn't always successful, especially when you have incompetent management.

But, yeah.... Do what works best. No hating here.

The thing is, Chicago hasn't been in the "cellar". They've been right in the middle and a Play-In team for the last 3 seasons.

Tanking isn't always successful, but when stockpiling high draft picks, you have more bites at the apple to get things right. They lucked up with Matas falling to them last year, now they just have to really hit on every pick they get because they won't be at the top of any drafts and will have to really scout well and add value with little to no margin for error.

needs 3 and D players that can attack off the pass and shoot off the pass.. rim running big and stretch big. I'm not sure he can be the best player on a championship team though

Shocked this (actual good thread) isn't 5+ pages long by now since it has some of the request for actual ball discourse opposed to the SAS/gossip antics that seem to garner so much attention :ehh:

Building around the FAN is excessive tho. He's an ancillary piece. Would only do that if you planned on not givin' af for a few years and maybe get some lucky runs out of it.

That's why I made this thread... I had it in mind for a while but after that Lakers game, I was like let me press the button.

I agree with the sentiment about him not being the best player on a championship team. Which is part of the reason this is intriguing to me because even with that being the case, your team still has to build out their roster with him heavily in mind if you are investing in him... even despite him not projecting to be that guy on a title contender it raises challenges for making it work.

The Bulls have a tremendous amount of leverage on this situation too with him being restricted. The teams that will have the most cap space are probably not going to offer Giddey what he's looking for (30M a year)

They should let him get a contract and then match it. There is no reason to sign him before he tests the market IMO.

Teams with the most space this summer:
Detroit
Orlando
Utah
Spurs
OKC
Brooklyn
Charlotte

Who is going to offer Giddey anywhere close to 30Ms out of this list?

You should spin-off this thread and ask the Coli the same question with Scottie Barnes.

It's not like Toronto's path forward is set at all. If you don't get a top 3-5 pick this year... meh
