Good 4/5 album that shoulda been great. Nas gotta look back at 1999 with a lot of frustration because he recorded an album that was one of his greatest achievements but with the bootlegging and label politics got spread across 4 projects
I Am one of the most interesting albums in Nas career though, not just the backstory but as a reflection of major label releases at that time, how Nas overall fanbase was different from others and how his albums got judged based on that
General consensus this album was dope when it dropped. Got played everywhere spring and summer of 99. Nas Is Like and Hate Me Now are iconic tracks. NYSOM2, Small World and Undying Love among Nas best tracks, fan favorite classics. Favor For A Favor and Life Is What You Make It are heaters. You Won't See Me Tonight should have been the third single, they dropped that in July with a Hype Williams video it woulda been huge. We Will Survive and Ghetto Prisoners good songs. Dr. Knockboot and Money Is My bytch are fun tracks, goofy but entertaining, but a big portion of Nas fanbase hate anything lighthearted from him. Album is too long, too much filler, not as cohesive as it coulda been but that was the era. The label wanted your street tracks, your tracks for the ladies, your tracks for the club, your tracks for down south or out west, your heartfelt track with the soft R&B beat and hook.
Nas occupied this weird space where he was a big star in the rap world but almost never crossed over outside a couple tracks. Time this album dropped, he was more high profile than like Mobb Deep or Raekwon who he share a lot in common with, but never fully reached the mainstream audience like Jay and DMX, and he tried to keep one foot in each lane. So you got a large portion of his fans that straight up hated shyt like Hate Me Now, You Won't See Me Tonight, Dr Knockboot, Money Is My bytch, KISSING. And they were loud about it. But same time, they were only 20% of his sales
