Anyone from down there can tell me what it's like living there? Theres a chance i may move down there for work. I went a few weeks ago and stayed down there for a few days on Main Street thinking it would be more to do but found quickly that there isn't much of anything. Bars are cool but their main street is short and everything seemed to close early. Not sure if there were more lively areas that I missed. I would say that I felt safe walking down the street at 2am and the people were nice. Not that many black folks I saw which is a negative to me. Houses seems nice but noticed most are HOAs which is not something I was ever wanting to sign up for. Need some thoughts from the folks that actually lives down there or use to.

There’s not much to Columbia. Like someone mentioned, it’s a college/military small city. The places to hangout are 5 pts and the Vista. 5 pts is mostly where the college age kids go and the Vista is a mixture college and older crowds.

There are plenty of black people around. You have Allen and Benedict colleges not too far. The black club scene is mostly dead but you have stripper type establishments like Vault and some others that I can’t think of right now around. Also there are a few sports bars, clubs and, lounges around like Seven, R&B Bar and Grill, and Room Service (RS has Renni Wednesdays where Renni Rucci comes out every 1st Wednesday of the month) and Chayz (pretty decent lounge for the older crowd). But not any high life chic urban spots like you’d find in Charlotte or Atlanta.

The Northeast part of Richland (the county Columbia is in) and going into Blythewood is where a lot of the growth is. You can find a nice house in one of the residential communities or buy you a plot of land in those areas if that’s more your style.

The areas I mentioned are maybe about 20 mins out from downtown Columbia. That’s one good thing about Columbia is that it doesn’t take too much time getting around locally. Plus it doesn’t take much time to get to more interesting destinations for a weekend getaway or day trip. You can get to Charlotte, Atlanta, Myrtle Beach and Charleston in a few hours at the most.

Its a good city in that there are a lot of Black people. Its college town but it's got a pretty relaxed vibe in my opinion.

Thanks for the insight. If I do get the transfer I plan on renting for a few months before buying anything to really understand where I would buy a house at. I did hear about Blythewood but didn't get a chance to do some drive by neighborhood watching. I think I missed out on checking Vista (didn't know about it) and 5point which I remember someone telling me is by the water or something. I may have to check back in again...

I grew up there. Lots of black neighborhoods. Just a typical smallish sized town
How's the racism in general? Folks seemed nice but would like to know from someone that grew up there. I only went for a couple of days.

Pros & cons from a black guy? Talk to me :patrice:
I’m not from Columbia but you may consider things close down “early” like 2 am there. I personally haven’t has any overt racism happen to me. To know more about local stuff I’d check in at a barbershop or attend a Benedict game or something .

Cool cool.

Is there a decent Hispanic community? The wife is Dominican it's not overly important to her but would be nice to know.
