Promotions and the job market are fukked up and we do not live in a meritocracy. Just gotta take the good with the bad. I'm looking for a job right now too, lost a job where I was the top candidate but their budget changed, and couldn't hire anyone. It's rough out there, you can do everything right, have the experience and still get fukked over. Plus if you're black, you're already starting in the hole.

If there are no opportunities at your current place time to leave.

Could be a host of reasons you didn’t get the job.. Maybe you didn’t interview well but since you said you was going hard for the position that tells me you didn’t interview well… Only thing I can think of is they put the position out there as a formality but they already had the person who they were going to give it too lined up but they had to conduct interviews to make it look official like you had a chance.. They play those types of games

They literally told me I had a great interview.

To answer some questions. I still have my current job. I do go out of my way to take on more responsibility because it shows them I'm serious about moving up. Overall, I'm just down and disappointed but I'm okay.

I swear to God I thought y'all was gonna roast me but y'all came out and made me feel good and special (no homo).

Thanks for all the support the next few days will be a bit tough

If you're already at the company, you could ask what it is that you need to improve on or ways to get promoted. Like other users have said, sometimes you have to switch companies. Don't get too caught up or too loyal to your company. Sometimes they pass over the best candidates for those who they have a better relationship with...or for ass kissers. You'll be good especially if you're a high performer already, which it sounds like you are. If they aren't clear with targets and goals for you, don't stay. My brother has been at a corporate gig for 10 years and hasn't been promoted. They'll tell you, "well you didn't quite meet your targets" or they'll continually be vague with you. Don't be like my brother--hoping they'll promote him one day.

Honestly from my experience, the people in certain (higher) positions aren't even the brightest...they usually just have good relationships with folks.

I know we laugh and shyt on each other on here and I try to keep my personal stuff off of here for the most part. But I have a really good job that I love and have been slowly moving up.

I went for a position I was certain I had. Interview was perfect but they just told me about an hour ago I didn't get the shyt.

I had know fukking idea I would feel this disappointed and worthless tbh.

I'm telling yall because we are a community and I'm ashamed to tell my friends and family.

I tried so fukking hard for that position

I don't even care if yall make fun of me I just needed to vent

Sorry

1- Why were you certain that you had the position?

2- Did you answer the interview questions apropriately?

3- You said you tried hard for the position, did you get feedback from HR as to why you didn’t get the position?

4- Are there openings for that same position in other companies? If so are you applying to them?

5- What is it about this particular rejection that is making you feel worthless?

W as this at another company or the company you currently work at? If it was at another company then you don’t internal politics and you could have been pass over for any reason, so don’t worry about it. If it your company then figure out how you want to proceed, but you may need a change.

I'm in the same exact boat as you OP. I applied for a position in December after I was strongly advised to do so. It looked like I was going to get it, but at the last minute a stronger candidate applied (internal as well) and he got the position. That shyt hurt a lot more than I thought it would. Only difference is I didn't tell my family I was applying because I didn't want to have to answer a bunch of awkward questions if I didn't get it.

I actually thought I had it in the bag until the very last minute we had a zoom meeting and he said I did not get it. I was sick. It's been like 3 weeks now and I'm finally starting to feel better. Keep your head up.

I can sympathise bro. Had an opportunity to get a great in a very prestigious company. Did everything I could to get the job. New suit. Interview practices. Whole lotta books read and studying. Aced the interview. Had great rapport with interviewer. But was unsuccessful. Still bothers me till this day. I still vent on occasion.

Don't even get disappointed over it, breh. If you were told the interview was great, be sure to follow up for feedback. Sometimes, as frustrating as it may be, the folks making the call need to see you trying to make sure you don't miss out on the next opportunity for them to make sure you don't.

Keep an open mind and ear for what they give you for feedback, though. The response you get can tell you everything you need to know about how invested everyone is, was, and will be in your advancement.
