Sound Reasoning
No risk, no reward. I would take the contract as you said there's no room to move up at your present job. Plus, opportunities sometimes come in different packages.

People kill me with the "I don't know how to get health insurance on my own." But you know to buy every gotdamn thing else. All you have to do is go online to different healthcare providers and shop the plans. Do the numbers like you would if you were buying a pair of red bottoms or a purse. Compare the pricing, compare the coverage and make the best choice. And it's not even as expensive as you would think.

Yes, it will be more than what you pay now because you're footing the bill by yourself. But woman up, and pay some extra on your dentist bill, so you can get a better paycheck and better exposure. Plus, with an extra $8000, you'll be fine with healthcare costs.

Hey, I've done several contracts and if you do good work, they hire you. And it's only 4-6 months? There's people doing much longer contracts than that.

I would take the contract. Because if you don't, I bet it will be a long time before the next chance comes. And you'll be sitting at the same job making the same money with the same credentials.

Peace

Two of my career goals for 2015 were to work on a new project and get a raise, which means switching companies. Tuesday, I got a call from a consultant about a job and today I had my interview. At the end of the interview, the manager asked me when I could start (:leostare:). 20 minutes into my trip home, I got the call about being offered the job.
I'm excited about the offer but I feel an immense amount of stress over it right now. I'll list the pros and cons

CONS:
Job is a 4-6 month temp to perm position. After that, the consultant assured me that the company does hire most people. -- I'm concerned about giving up my stable job for something that might not pan out in the end.
For the 4-6 months that I'm a temp employee, I'll have no benefits -- I've never had to navigate the healthcare system on my own. I wouldn't know where to start...Obamacare? Not only that but I won't be getting any contribution to my 401K during that time. Also, even if I do get the job, I won't be eligible for 401K company contribution until 1 year into being employed
Although I want to move on, I didn't expect the opportunity to present itself so quickly. | I'm being a punk I know it...
If after the 4-6 months, it's possible that they don't make me perm | Unemployed??:usure: No bueno:snoop:

PROS:
The salary I was offered is $8K more than what I currently make
I'll be working on a cutting edge project, with a company that will look great on my resume
I could be made a permanent employee!! Once permanent, I can renegotiate for more money.
Benefits kick in upon being made permanent:
2 Weeks Vacation / Year, 5 Days Sick Days / Year, Short & Long Term Disability (Company Paid), 401K with matching contributions after 1 year, Health Insurance (Company pays 80% of coverage cost), 8 Paid Holidays
No RISK No REWARD! This could be a huge learning experience for me

I kinda feel pressured by the consultant to take the job; he wants my answer by tomorrow. They want me to put in my two weeks on Monday and I'm honestly not feeling that. Since I have a job, I feel like I'm going to push the envelope and see how bad they want me.

I've decided to play my hand and alter the original terms...First of all I'm going to tell him that I'll give him my final decision on Monday, rather then tomorrow. Then Monday, I'm going to accept the offer but only if they pay me one more dollar and give me a future 3 week start date.

I'm goin in!!! From the $1,000 to $100,000 Coli Brehs, gimme some negotiating tips!

Also I want to mention that I might have another interview within the next two weeks...

I took my current job on the with the same Pro's and Con's......

Long story short...It's the best job I ever had!!!! I even moved to the northwest side of Houston.....:scust: for it.

I don't make any life altering decisions with praying on it. If I feel a peace about it, I move on it. Just make sure you at peace with the decision. Also don't burn those bridges...:usure:

What did you negotiate exactly?

Saturday I declined the position under the terms they offered, which was only 8K more than what I make now and they wanted me to start in two weeks. I ran the figures and I realized that wasn't a come up since I'd be losing 401K contributions and health insurance...this morning they were calling me offering 18K more and I can start in 3 weeks.
:dead::heh: why did I already know you did this:snoop:

:patrice: you not have used perm:ufdup:

My hair has been natural for long enough to feel confident that it won't get me fired. And HELL NO I WOULD NEVER RELAX MY HAIR AGAIN.

With the new financial terms, I can afford health insurance and Roth IRA contribution...As my man @Silver Surfer said, "Do your due diligence"...I'll stack my money...And while I"m over at Lockheed, I'll make business contacts.

Congrats. They must've been really low balling you to increase pay by 10K without blinking.

Let me borrow $20 tho. :feedme:

i know playing it safe isn't always the way to go. But i would hold out for a full time position. to leave a job with benefits for a 4 to 6 month position doesnt sound reasonable. Stop assuming they are gonna hire you. YOu dont know that. If anything, dont burn bridges with your current job. tell them the situation. that way you can get your old job back if things dont work out. Does this new company hire a lot of black people(im assuming your black). do your research.

You're right; no risk, no reward was my thought process though. I'm confident enough in my abilities that I can find another job should things not work out. I only saw two people when I interviewed...both white. The manager was vibin with me though and I know that he thinks I'd be an addition to the company. I have no desire to have the job I have no...no upward mobility and I'd be wasting way. I'm doing it the right way and giving them 2 weeks notices, without giving them the middle finger :-)
