It has zero to do with any of that shyt. It comes down to putting greater value on Whiteness than Blackness
Yes that is part of it, after all we live in society that practice, promoted and institutionalize the doctrine of white supremacy.
I grew up on the West Side of Chicago in the 80's and 90's. Nobody shamed somebody for being smart.
Are you saying because you did not see it or experience then it does not exist?
Are you also negating all the experience and opinions of the other poster in this thread who attested to the fact that they experience it?
To claim that "Nobody shamed somebody for being smart" is pure arrogance how can you speak for every school or for every ones experience in the school you attended.
Do you agree or do you disagree that "bullying" existed and still does exist in schools today?
If you agree that bullying exist, then you must realize that depending on the particular idiosyncrasy or eccentricity of the individual being bullied possesses dictates the label/nomenclature that's applied.
If the person being bullied is gay - its called homophobic, if the person being bullied is Black and the bully is white, it is called Racism/racist...the basic reason for bullying in most cases is that the victim usually deviates from the norm.
Nobody shamed Black people for knowing about African history or African American history.
Up till the 70"s only African history taught in school was about them being slaves...nothing else.
If you thought all your ancestor were nothing but slaves and all inventions and discoveries were done by whites.....no one would have to shame you - you would be shame by that fact whenever you in school
African History beyond slavery was not taught in schools and its was heavily contested when Blacks demanded it be taught...the very idea of Black history beyond slavery was ridicule by the White establishment at first. Still today a significant portion of Black history is still being contested.
Nobody was shamed for being good at math or science.
Again you do not nor can you speak for everyone experience, nor can you deny their own experience just because you did not experience it....that's not unlike some whites who say the do not see or believe racism exist.
By pathologizing Black achievements, when blacks excel it is seen as an oddity/rarity and when Black underachieve it is seen as innate... in most high school situation when ever you deviate from the norm you will be expose to criticism and ridicule...thus create an air of expectation for Blacks to fail. Expectation often creates self fulfilling prophecy.
Nobody was shamed for going to HBCUs. Nobody was shamed for going to any college or university.
True....Getting into college was a great thing and thing for you and your entire family (race) to be proud of...
I am addressing and I thought the OP was also addressing elementary to high school years...but mostly high school.
People were shamed for thinking that White people or acting like White people was better than being from Black people.
So once again people are making up a bunch of shyt.
No... the whole society of the US dictates that you think of white as better than all other races. If you live in America you are social to think act and behave this way .
It then becomes your responsibility as a person of color to unwrap and free yourself from this social indoctrination....if you do not do then you become by default a racist.
