I’ve said on here many times black folks wasn’t fukking with Whitney like that till after the Bodyguard. I remember my pops calling her and Lionel Richie sellouts. A lot of it had to do with the fact that her mother was this great gospel singer and Whitney ended up being a pop tart

Lol. You my nikka but you should have a lot more respect for Whitney being a Mary J. Blige stan and all. :russ:

Mary said performing with Whitney at the Divas Live show in 1999 opened up doors for her all over and was pretty much what brought her over to the mainstream world.

If it wasn’t for Whitney, your fave would probably still be local.

The thing I loooove about the Coli is the fact that no matter how outrageous a claim may be, there will always be posters to co-sign it. Trust me. Don't believe me? I guarantee you make a thread right now stating the dumbest and most outrageous shyt you can think of and you gonna get at least 4 or 5 posters that's gonna cosign.

Man, woman, and child
They also booed Bobby Ferrin for that Don’t Worry Be Happy at the same awards that year
People forget that by like 86-87 black folks taste was starting to change. The older heads still loved those singers in the same vein as a Luther, Stephanie Mills, Patti Labelle, etc. Whitney didn’t really fit that mold.

Among the young folks they wanted to hear shyt that sounded more hip hop which is why I mentioned Lisa Lisa. She got more love in the hood than Whitney at the time and she wasn’t even black
:russ:

You couldn’t do the wop or the cabbage patch to I Wanna Dance With Somebody

wait y’all old nikkas wasn’t fukking with I Wanna Dance With Somebody?

No, we weren't. MSM forced that song on us relentlessly.

Like a Black female Rick Astley.

We wanted more of Janet Jackson and got........THAT......instead.......:shaq2:

Also, this was back when Latin Freestyle music was becoming HUGE.

Whitney would have like 6 singles per album. It must be a regional thing because she was putting up numbers with popularity down south.

Just because she had crossover appeal doesn’t mean black folks didn’t rock with her. There was just an abundance of great music and artists to choose from.

Imagine having to choose which concert to go to: Whitney, Luther, the DeBarges who were still popular and that’s not even mentioning a-listers like Prince and Mike
Was a great time in music life. So many heavy hitters that knew how to perform.
