The thread title is more incendiary than it needs to be, but the premise of the spurs needing to cut back on the long 2’s they attempt and to increase their 3 point volume is valid. It’s not a good thing to both lead the league in long 2’s taken and bear near the bottom in 3’s taken.
I'm trying to generate traffic (and it does speak to a greater point that Pop's the only coach in the league taking this approach). Let a nikka live.
I think you jumped the gun with this one breh

"They've been shooting at a rate this month which is simply NOT sustainable (45% from 3 on 22 attempts per game - efforts most notably from their 2nd unit; 55% on two-point shots), and will only lead to a regression that they won't be able to pick up the slack of, because LMA and DeRozan don't take enough 3s to make up for it (or to be more specific, they take considerably more long-2s than 3s). Once the team's 3-pt shooting regulates to a normal level (they shot 38% from 3 on 24 attempts before this month), it'll give y'all a clearer picture of where their offense is at.
It's certainly not a good sign that this recent offensive spike is from the role players' production. Now, of course, some of this could be mitigated if they continue to play well on the defensive end, but their current offensive structure/approach will only succeed in the long run if they follow in line with the rest of the league.
Edit: They're also top-5 in contested shots made this month too, which makes their shooting that more of an outlier."
Before this month, they were around league-average on offense (
and this is with them shooting 38% from behind the arc!), and their starting offense was loitering around in the bottom-10 for a good portion of the first 20-odd games. Since they attempt low-volume 3s and high-volume long-2s (in relation to the rest of the league), they need to hit their 3s at a considerably higher rate than the league-average to stay above the surface.
This applies more specifically to LMA and DeRozan who attempt over 14 shots combined from the midrange, yet only attempt ONE 3-pt shot combined. Your offense isn't going to have success in the long run if your two main options are swimming against the tide of the league.
This recent offensive spike (must take into account they've played 9 out of the last 12 games at home) has been down to the role players shooting at an unsustainable rate. Now, once the regression hits, it's not like DeRozan and LMA can equalize it because they aren't even
shooting 3s to begin with.
