I think you jumped the gun with this one breh :hubie:
The thread title is more incendiary than it needs to be, but the premise of the spurs needing to cut back on the long 2’s they attempt and to increase their 3 point volume is valid. It’s not a good thing to both lead the league in long 2’s taken and be near the bottom in 3’s taken.

I'm trying to generate traffic (and it does speak to a greater point that Pop's the only coach in the league taking this approach). Let a nikka live.

"They've been shooting at a rate this month which is simply NOT sustainable (45% from 3 on 22 attempts per game - efforts most notably from their 2nd unit; 55% on two-point shots), and will only lead to a regression that they won't be able to pick up the slack of, because LMA and DeRozan don't take enough 3s to make up for it (or to be more specific, they take considerably more long-2s than 3s). Once the team's 3-pt shooting regulates to a normal level (they shot 38% from 3 on 24 attempts before this month), it'll give y'all a clearer picture of where their offense is at.

It's certainly not a good sign that this recent offensive spike is from the role players' production. Now, of course, some of this could be mitigated if they continue to play well on the defensive end, but their current offensive structure/approach will only succeed in the long run if they follow in line with the rest of the league.

Edit: They're also top-5 in contested shots made this month too, which makes their shooting that more of an outlier."

Before this month, they were around league-average on offense (and this is with them shooting 38% from behind the arc!), and their starting offense was loitering around in the bottom-10 for a good portion of the first 20-odd games. Since they attempt low-volume 3s and high-volume long-2s (in relation to the rest of the league), they need to hit their 3s at a considerably higher rate than the league-average to stay above the surface.

This applies more specifically to LMA and DeRozan who attempt over 14 shots combined from the midrange, yet only attempt ONE 3-pt shot combined. Your offense isn't going to have success in the long run if your two main options are swimming against the tide of the league.

This recent offensive spike (must take into account they've played 9 out of the last 12 games at home) has been down to the role players shooting at an unsustainable rate. Now, once the regression hits, it's not like DeRozan and LMA can equalize it because they aren't even shooting 3s to begin with.

Someone change the thread from pop to derozan

This is one of those games where you cant be swapping 3s for 2s . Every 3 Houston makes demar retaliates by trying to get harden in foul trouble... all for it to end with 2s :francis:

How you gon have marco and davis out there and not use them demar :francis:

I personally cant even blame pop on this one, demar just seemed hell bent on getting harden in trouble. (Bare in mind I only caught the 3rd quarter)

.And yet another game where the Spurs' infatuation with the midrange/long-2 is drowned out by the opposition team's 3s. Like I said, once the role players' shooting regulates to a normal level (this most especially apparent in the first half), the structure of their offense rears its ugly head when DeRozan and LMA can't outscore teams from the midrange.

You can see the spacing the Rockets have, which gives everyone more room to work with because they're prioritizing 3s, and then you see the Spurs where LMA and DeRozan are shrinking the floor for the rest of their teammates by prioritizing the midrange/long-2s.

ROCKETS ARE 1ST IN 3P ATTEMPTS
WHILE THE SPURS ARE DEAD LAST.

:lolbron:YET BOTH ARE 1 GAME ABOVE .500

Doesn't that prove his point... Rockets went from a top team shooting the most threes to a bottom team shooting the most threes.

You're bringing roster changes into the conversation as if the Spurs have been completely healthy.
:lolbron:

We saw what happened tonight when the 3-ball kept the Rockets out in front of the Spurs (not to mention they blew the Spurs out a few weeks ago 136-105, trading 3s v. 2s), and DeRozan and LMA were intent on trying to get theirs in the midrange (went a combined 4-14 from the midrange). They did this without CP3 too.

So the Spurs, who are 3-11 in gamed when they attempt more than 25 3's in a game, should shoot more 3's? Is that what I'm hearing?
And this is why this stat is nonsense (regardless of the fact someone took their win/loss record, and created a story out of their 3-pt attempts without any actual context of how they even lost these games).

LMA and DeRozan went 4-14 from the midrange/long-2 (they attempted ZERO 3s), but if they replaced the majority of those long-2s with 3s (exceeding this arbitrary team-line of 25 threes), the Spurs would've had a greater chance of winning in this game.

What happened here is OP wanted to appear to be smart when it comes to basketball. When the Spurs were in a funk he tried to jump the gun early and say he called it in an attempt to appear smart. The problem is when you jump the gun early in an attempt to appear smart, it can backfire on you. It did backfire on him and now he looks the opposite of what he intended. If you would've just waited to make your comments instead of jumping the gun early in an attempt to appear intelligent on basketball situations, this would've never happened. Then he talks about basketball like it's some type of analytical computer game( all they have to do is step back a few feet and take the 3 instead of the 2). Basketball is supposed to be about the flow of the game and taking what the defense gives you. Simply telling a very intelligent coach like Pop to just take 3's instead of open shots in the flow of the game isn't how he operates.

Tonight was a good example.

We shot more efficiently than the Rockets but lost the game.

LMA and DeRozan both shot 50% from the floor and shot zero 3s. If they make 1 3pt shot, this is a 1 possession game and who knows what happens.

You can break this down any way you want but this is the type of game we can and should win most nights. It is only 1 game so you cant freak out. But it is indicative of the inherent limitations of our offensive strategy.
