If Aaliyah was still here, do you think she would be the best female artist in R&B/Pop right now?

Context made no sense. Janet did it first, no DUH...but guess what???
there was someone doing it before Janet... and some one before that. This is like bringing up Micheal Jackson when we're talking about Usher, and Timberlake in the early 2000's....
This thread is about Aaliyah. At the time in 2001, between all the young RNB female acts, Aaliyah had the slot.
You keep bringing up Janet, as if she was Aaliyah's peer, as if they came out the same time or was in the same age range... No duh Janet Jackson was the model, Aaliyah said it one in a millions of times.
No, the post I replied inferred that Bey was using Aaliyah as her model when it fact it was Janet. Aaliyah was not in blockbuster movies and selling out concerts. That is a fact.

*Edit* and in 2000/2001, the 9 time Grammy winning Lauryn Hill had that crown you talking about

All yet she didn't release another album until 2001

lets do the math
1996 Aaliyah drops If Your Girl Only Knew August 13, 1996. Two Weeks Later , August 27, 1996 the Album One In A Million is released August 27...A week later ,it sold only 40,000 copies... Yet it continues to Sell GRADUALLY on a week by week basis.

1997 7 Hit Singles later One In A Million is sitting at 9 million worldwide...in 1997 she also drops The Anastasia theme song, for the soundtrack to the Movie.. it was very
successful
1998 From the Dr. Doolittle Soundtrack, Aaliyah releases Are You That Somebody... the SONG WAS EVERY WHERE..The Video stayed on T.V music stations.... to the point that Destiny Child and TLC crafted their album after that one song...
1999/2000 Aaliyah does the Romeo Must Die movie and soundtrack. The sound track spawned hits for Aaliyah such as; Come Back In One Piece, Are You Feeling Me, I Don't Wanna, and of Course the SUPER QUADRUPLE smash hit TRY AGAIN...

2001 she drops Resoulotion and her new album....

you act as if Aaliyah was just chilling from 1996-2001...

Yeah and Janet was way bigger than that, she was the model, not Aaliyah, and what blockbuster flicks you talking about? Jet Li? And where you getting that 9 mil copies from? I need to see receipts. It sold about 3.7 and half that happened after she died...

What does Janet even have to do with the discussion? Janet was still one of the biggest artists on the planet in 2001. There is no argument on that. Why is she even being brought into it.

And One In A Million was selling like that before Aaliyah died.

:what: Lauryn Hill >>>>>>>, but during that period, Lauryn Hill was on hiatus. She pretty much exiled herself from the industry and didn't show back up until 2002. Even then, it was just for an Unplugged album.

1. Romeo Must Die made 91 million dollars how is that not a block buster?:why:
and Aaliyah was not selling out concerts???:why: You know she was doing shows in other countries as a sophomore in High School right???:comeon:
how u have all these hit records, and sell all those albums, and not sell out shows???:why:

2. Janet was, and is the icon. many women in general , and of course blk women including Aaliyah, looked up to Janet.....
Yes Bey has surpassed Aaliyah in every shape and form.
BUT Aaliyah was infact the model for Beyonce, and not Janet. Aaliyah came out as a solo act JUST before Beyonce, and was doing Bey before Bey.
Bey was a teenager, and closer to Aaliyah's age if not the same age :sas2:... whereas Janet was well into her 30's...
Aaliyah alongside Monica, and Brandy were the 3 headed TEEN dragons in the mid to late 90's... Aaliyah especially with her fashion and swag was doing stuff that young black women in her age group could relate to.... cough cough Beyonce.

3. Now U just naming and comparing any random black female singers you can think of. Lauryn, Beyonce, Aaliyah are not even the same type of artists... Soley as a singer, Lauryn was more Angie Stone, Alcia Keys, Erykah Badu, MAry J Blige, Whitney ... while Beyonce and Aaliyah were more so entertainers like a Jodi Watley, Madonna, Janet Jackson than just strictly vocalist....

who you're gonna say next?? Josephine Baker??

1. What tour did Aaliyah go on and sell out :why:
I lived down the street from the biggest coliseum on the east coast and I saw them all, Biggie, Fugees, Jay-Z, Nas, Junior Mafia, R. Kelly, MJB. Aaliyah never ever ever did a big tour like that.

and no Romeo Must Die is not some legendary blockbuster. It made 55 mil in the USA. I don't care what it made in China due to Jet Li being in it either

2. for the last time Bey was not trying to be Aaliyah, they were all trying be JANET
3. forget about POP even though she was on top there to, Lauryn Hil was the top R&B/HIP-HOP artist in the game. That's exactly the same lane as Aaliyah was running in. Are you kidding:why:

1. don't switch it up breh. first u said concert

Aaliyah was not in blockbuster movies and selling out concerts.

now it's tour. I don't know what tour she did or didn't do, but if you go on you tube, there's clips of Aaliyah performing all over the world...

2. At the time BEY came out, BEY was 17., Aaliyah was 19 and was coming off a genre defining Album with great commercial success, and even more smash hit singles.
Janet is Janet, she's the icon was, and always will be. Aaliyah had Janet in her DNA, but Aaliyah was also doing her own shyt that Janet wasn't doing that Bey and other young women were fans of. Aaliyah was more relateable to a young Beyonce than Janet, and was leading the culture. no different then how in 88', Bobby was more relateatble to young black men, and blk teenage men than Micheal Jackson and Prince. those are the gods, but it is what it is...

3. Who the fukk said Romeo must die is legendary? it was flick that did extremely good at the box office, therefore a block buster, and by the way it's still a good watch.

1. Switch it up, ok find me a CONCERT that Aaliyah sold out. It wasn't happening. TOUR just means she went to different cities and tried to sell out CONCERTS. Come on man:dahell:
2. all I was saying was JANET was the standard. Why would Bey, Brandy, Monica, etc etc set there sights so low?
3. I don't know what your definition of a blockbuster is but Romeo Must Die was NOT

In terms of touring, besides Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, and Mariah were going to sell out stadiums, who else was selling out stadiums solo? Let's be real.

1. Romeo Must Die did 91 Million.... the #'s has spoken. You can kill that.

2. "set their sights so low" yet when i post actual footage of "the Standards " in Whitney, and Janet both praising Aaliyah here's what u had to say
I'm pretty sure on this page i said Aaliyah was a great R&B artist...

if Janet, and Whitey marveled at Aaliyah WHAT You think Bey, and them who were around, or came after thought about Aaliyah???
who said it's either or??? u know you can look up to multiple ppl at once right???

I'm sure Aaliyah looked up to Brandy, and Monica for being better vocalists than her . I'm sure Monica looked up to Brandy and Aaliyah for their success in holly wood. I'm sure Monica and Brandy looked up to Aaliyah for how fashion forward, and she was and setting trends that young women were following. I'm sure Bey looked up to all 3 of them... i'm sure all 4 of them looked up to Janet... it's not that difficult.

I just said that Bey looked up to Aaliyah as well, since Aaliyah was Hot when Bey was getting her feet wet. and being around the same age Aaliyah was more relate-able to BEY in terms of what she was doing ...

2. Aaliyah was all over the radio, and selling records. Had Legends praising here. was performing for President Clinton at the white house

"but but she couldn't perform live, she couldn't sing" tho.

anyways, yet u saying Aaliyah was struggling to sell tickets to young women, especially young blk women.??.:mjgrin::mjgrin: cause she didn't perform by ya house, or u just didn't bother to go see her??:mjlol::mjlol:

i'm not going back and forth. pun intended.
