This is kind of the problem I have with his latest album.

He has some basic social commentary and acts like its something profound....but scratching the surface at best.

He'll get cosigned because there's a "message" but it's neither profound nor deep. Like, you don't have to listen to his album or watch this interview to figure this out

Thats why i dont like shallow surface level concious crap like his latest lp(i like it just not the whole concious stuff), Kendrick, cole,etc

nikkas get praised to high heaven for releasing projects because they uttered a few words about brutality and black poverty(And dont offer no solutions or anything) despite what awful performance of rapping they do in the album, and/or the albums quality.

As someone who was a big fan of his when he first came out Joey is a "low hanging fruit" ass nikka. His entire basis is that he don't get love in the hood cause he intellectually superior but all he really does is acknowledge social issues. Steez on the other hand made some really profound reflections in his music

Is it true or nah? People in the hood ain't trying to hear about social issues. Personal drama/issues is a deft way to show intellectualism without coming off too high horsey. That's what Drake does. All these other guys, Kendrick, Cole, etc...had cosigns. If you ain't got that you ain't gonna pop and besides urban intellectualism is a staple of NY hip hop so I get his frustration

Now even though I do love me some trap muzik that shyt doesn't elevate the mind at all and the only reason why I listen to it is because the beats are lit and some nikkaz got good flow on them. Other than that what these nikkaz are saying is fukkin garbage and elementary shyt when you pay attention. I look at it as a source of entertainment but some nikkaz do look at is a lifestyle and that's where it can be detrimental. I fukk with Joey's new album it's good to have that balance of the real shyt.

Trap needs to evolve..

People need to evolve. I used to listen to nothing but hip hop and distinctly remember saying Rock and all that stuff was white boy music. As a impressionable kid, I started to emulate the patterns in some of the music, trying to be like that. Between middle school and high school I found interest in techno and eventually trance - genres with little to vocals. I left behind the toxic mindset that started to develop when I was listening exclusively to hip hop and rap. Then I found myself branching out even more, eventually getting into some rock and metal. By then I wasn't like most kids trying to fit into some image, but just enjoying the music. I learned to separate myself.

The problem is even though people want to be an individual, they still follow the crowd seeing acceptance into whatever is currently hot. If it's little kids or adolescents who haven't learned it's ok to not fit in, they're gonna internalize that music and turn into what that music portrays. People gotta start branching out

I mean that's just something he gotta accept as it was the case before he got on. The hood hasn't supported intellectual rap on a huge level since the 90s. He would be naive to expect something different

This is why I strayed away from most "conscious" hip hop music made after like 2012-2013.

It's too tailored imo
