Redman has 3 classic albums, how many other rappers can claim that? And this isn't on some half classic or maybe classic shyt either. Certified.

Doc's Da Name is 4 mic worthy and Malpractice is still very solid and Red Gone Wild is a strong album as well. Reggie was only to fulfil contract requirements with Def Jam I believe so it was more of a rushed and half-assed project. Mudface was one of the best albums last year.

Now Muddy Waters 2 coming out and if the beats are on point you know it's gonna be great because Redman can STILL rap incredibly well.

Top 10 on everyone's list he should be.

Top 3 for me.

Most of my favorites are good at painting pictures and telling stories. Outside of the Superman Lover series, that's never really been Redman's lane. I'm a big fan of his work, though.

He's in my top 10 but I could understand why he's not in other people's because he has no real content. Majority of his music is just rapping about smoking weed, bytches, and petty crimes while putting them in clever metaphors. and while most rappers have somewhat similar content, the best ones actually do it with a message/meaning or storytelling.


Some people who are big into content might not put him there.

And that's without mentioning yet people like Ice Cube, Raekwon, Prodigy, Common, Guru, Big Pun, AZ who would arguably all be above him too, and a bunch of others too. But in general I probably see the majority of those names more than Red.

i feel like he really didn't fall off until malpractice. that was the end of what had been a great career
because before that album all his albums had been great on different levels IMO
but malpractice is where he fell off to me

I know there has likely been countless threads on this before, but how many rappers can boast three straight certified classic albums in a row? This is a serious inquiry here, to measure this feat against the backdrop of frequency with which it has or hasn't occurred....in other words, if it's happened alot in rap, does that then dilute Red's achievement of it?

Do we then limit it to rap eras? Like, when LL did it or when EPMD did it, the rap audience was thirstier for the music and the music wasn't as readily available as it is now. So then does it follow that perhaps it was easier to make classics in certain eras than it was in others, due in part at least to those factors (including today's culture, where the audience doesn't thirst as much due to the immediate access not only to listen to but also MAKE (shytty, lol) music)?

Mebbe this should be it's own thread, sorry, lol. But I DO believe that we should start to look at rap music history in terms of ERAS. That's gonna garner more appreciation across the board, I think. That's how you eliminate those impossible-to-win debates about Rapper A from 1989 being better than Rapper Q from 2004.

my coliclassic series definitely covers some of that discussion, but there is something to be said about different eras and what a classic means in relation to different periods of time

Pac (arguably four)
KRS

All dropped at least three straight classic albums in a row. Some did it in different eras, but they still did it. Some might argue other names (Nas, Luda, Gucci, TI, etc.) whose careers fit the criteria, but again, they will argue from the perspective of those artists' respective eras.

So how do we measure that?

What I love about Redman's first 3 albums is all they're all some of the best work of their respective year

It's like shytting on the 12th richest man for not being among the 10 richest, even if #10 is worth 20 billion and #12 19.3 billion.


But I'd assume that it's his very niche style, and that he doesn't really shine outside of it. Which means that a lot of people will consider him top 5, while others just respect him but really don't play his music.
