When I was in 6th grade I think, our textbook showed West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, DC as the Northeast.

That's how I see it till this day.

The reason why people get confused with Maryland is because it became a confluence of two cultures: Maryland's historical roots were in the agrarian plantation culture which is traditionally associated with the South. Maryland also saw the rise of a bustling nautical culture traditionally associated with New England.

Maryland essentially had two economies battling it out for influence. The the nautical culture overtook the agrarian culture as the popularity of slavery started to wane.

You can see this nautucal culture very much alive in places like Annapolis with the formation of the Naval Academy which brought sort of a nautical prestige to Maryland.

Despite that fact, its historical roots are in the agrarian south. But culturally is quite frankly a mix of both. Which is why it is properly considered Mid-Atlantic.

Yea. Maryland historically was the South. If you were a runaway slave you didn’t breathe a sigh of relief until you crossed into Pennsylvania/Philadelphia. But now in modern day it’s more of a bridge (along with Delaware) from the North to the South. Mid-Atlantic is the correct term.
