In your opinion, why is Jay Z so popular and successful?

Jay-Z didn't market himself into shyt. Dame and later Steve Stoute, made Jay-Z. And before you say why don't they make another Jay-Z, why didn't Gloria Carter make another one?

:what:

What he was trying to say with that line is why dont they find another rapper and make him as successful as Jay seeing as they apparently made him into a success.

Again :what:

I disagree... Going to a Jay-Z concert is less about the music and more about it being a status symbol for hipster whites and bougie blacks. Look at the price of his tickets.

You think Gayle King or Ashlee Simpson goes to break down his verses from RD?

It's the new version of going to the opera or going to see Cats on broadway... You think Cats was really better than everything else on or off broadway? It's more about his branding than anything.

And the fact that his shows provide a safe enviornment for gentrified or suburban residents to come meat peep on an aspect of "urban" culture with zero risk also plays into this.

That's like saying the reason Jordans sellout so quickly is because "it's a really quality shoe"
LOL, while Gayle King or Ashlee Simpson might not go to break down his verses from RD, do you think they don't know his radio friendly songs like Give It To Me, Dirt Off Your Shoulder, Excuse Me Miss, etc? That's my whole point. Jay has been so successful because he maintains hip hop fans with some of his music, and he gets the more casual fan with his radio/party joints. He has fans of all types. THATS why he is so successful.

Your Air Jordan comparison is terrible. You comparing a sneaker to a musical artist. A better one would be, do you think Bulls games were sold out because it was the "cool" thing to do, or because Michael Jordan was the greatest basketball player ever?

The only people who disagree with me are people who got caught up in the hype thanks to his business moves that helped promote his music and those who may actually like his music for themselves.

Hear about his business plan? What are you talking about? Hiim staying on recent trends to where his features and topic in songs suited the trends, him having the right people back him up and him using biggies death to boost his popularity is many factors that do not relate to talent. His aim was popularity and he did that well.
Amazing that you honestly think because YOU may not like his music, that others don't as well. Like YOU are the barometer.

No his music is the foundation of his success. The gimmicks you are referring to only keep you alive for so long. NOT 17 YEARS AND COUNTING. His career has spanned longer than some of the dudes on this site have been alive. Dude releases music and the hip hop world goes crazy. And you claim that's because of "business moves"? Negro please.

Forest Gump of rap.

Everything aligned perfectly for dude.

Lack of competition, modern day media/marketing(nikka hit his prime right as the internet blew up), Beyonce, and being a safe negro.

All that "charisma & personality" talk is bogus.Jigga is odd as fukk and not much of a orator outside of the studio. His interviews seem awkward, almost like he's in pain

It's his stature/ money that makes him "charismatic".He's revered because he's the gate keeper.nikkaz know Jay is the bridge to that 20 million dollar+ club.

All these new rap nikkaz are his children. That's why the game is so fukked up.Everybody's trying to be flash and business savvy instead of just focusing on being good artist.

Not every cat's going to have that Forest Gump luck

None of those songs are great songs.. The music is secondary....Plus none of the songs you named even charted that high. I don't think any of them ever went to number one. And I seriously doubt that Gayle and Ashlee could recite the words to Dirt Off My Shoulder or Excuse Me Miss..It's all about the branding and the experience.

If my Jordan's comparision was the Kingdome Come of analogies then your Bulls comparision is the Blue Print 3 of analogies...

But let's go with that..

Do Lakers games sell out because Kobe is talented or because it's a place to network and be seen? The majority of people at Lakers games aren't really basketball fans...The majority of Jay-Z fans don't like rap or Black people.

It's modern day c00n opera..

This isn't even about me not liking his music its about the people that do.

There are two types of people here.

Those that genuinely like jay and become his fans for him and those casual rap fans who go from rapper to rapper.

His career is long because of his business moves and and trend hopping that kept the casual rap fans on him for so long.

Who else has did so much as rapping while making big music moves behind the scenes and stayed on trends and trendy topics in his raps as much as jay?

We really gonna act like his moves other than rapping hasn't effected his success at all? Werd?

Do his business moves help? Of course. But its not the foundation of his success. If all it took were smart business moves, we all know there would be a lot more rappers out there with that type of success.

.
And you are acting just because YOU like him because of his MUSIC that everyone else in the crowd next to you throwing up diamonds feels the same way.

It's like my wife and her friends that buy the pink NFL jerseys and want to throw super bowl parties but can't name 5 starters on either team..

Jay-Z concerts are Super Bowls for hypebeasts...

That's the thing tho. Not every rapper wants the Jay Z type of success. Some of them are happy with what they do have and the life and things they were able to accomplish. Some rappers are happy with having some sort of normalcy and a bit of privacy in their lives. Not all of them are hungry for that type of spotlight. Contrary to popular belief.

Yeah they do.

If they didnt they would rap in their basement
Musically, Jay has some good joints. It actually took me awhile to really get into Jay. At first I was a pure Nas fan and hated Jay because he stood for everything Nas was against.

But years later, I slowly checked for Jay was surprised and how good some of albums really are. I guess when you compare them to the wack rap that is out today.

Albums like AG, Black Album, Kingdom Come (yes, I'm one of the few that likes the album), Blueprint, cannot be ignored.

By the way, Magna Carter is wack.

The difference between Nas and Jay is that Jay is able to expand his fanbase every album cycle ... That takes talent

Especially when its hard to heat "NEW" in hiphop

Nas is the best at making music for his fanbase. I would say he is the best ever at it.

He is the master of his brand. In this era image is everything and Jay has mastered his. Unfortunately his music leaves something to be desired. It's no longer the focus; its the vehicle for his brand.

What is left to be desired on MC?

The lyrics, production and concepts are all top notch.

I asked you already who else made as much big business moves as him?

You said that if it took business moves there would be more rappers with his type of success then name a rapper who made big business moves as him who isn't as popular as he is?
