Well yeah but John Carmack didn't leave with 15 employees from Id. It's possible Levine took so many key people from Irrational that keeping the studio going would just be the name alone.

Fred.

well what exactly would Irrational be working on without Levine?

Sequels to "Bioshock" I assume. In the blog he said he handed off the rights to Take-Two/2K.

I bet most gamers wouldn't even know what games Irrational made if you asked them, so there's no reason to keep the studio open if the creative team leaves. It's not like Id or Valve where the brand carries a certain weight.

Idk i didnt play it
I heard it was a racist game tho but it could be blown out of proportion :manny:

It had racist characters but they were the enemy. It would be like saying "Call of Duty" is pro-terrorist.

But that's not why I did :dahell:

I did :dahell: because it's not like Irrational failed. The "Bioshock" series made $500+ mill. Basically the guy that started the company bounced, took 15 employees with him, and signed a new contract with Take-Two.

So even if the game was racist, this still wouldn't be poetic justice.

I'm pretty sure Infinite lost money though. It was heavily discounted like a month or so after it came out. The game was in development hell for years and if you look at the early builds there's a lot of more ambitious stuff they were gonna include that got dropped or scaled back.

Ken was too big of a name to just cut him loose so they scaled back his team to something more manageable and less risky.

some of these AAA games sell 5 or so million and the budgets for them are so out of control they aren't profitable. i remember Tomb Raider did somewhere around that and Square Enix acted like it was a disappointment.

Ken Levine isn't a big name in gaming, most people have no idea who he is. If his spending was out of control they wouldn't let him open another studio just because he's Ken Levine. Especially not under the same parent company. I could understand if he was a free agent that resigned from Irrational and severed ties with Take-Two.

But "hey, you just cost us millions of dollars producing a franchise that traditionally sells shy of 4 mill, let's re-up your contract"? Doesn't make much sense. People always want a more interesting version of things, so I guess "they lost a ton of money" is more exciting than "Ken Levine got bored and left the company". :yeshrug:
