Is 4K really the way to go for Scorpio/Neo? Digital Foundry thinks it's not worth it

every outdated piece of tech was "good enough" at some point

4k TV's exist. what is the problem with having a 4k console?

the cynicism here is just weird sometimes. dudes are here arguing that tech shouldn't advance :mindblown:
I am starting to think that many on this board didn't really start gaming heavy till the 360/PS3 game was around. This almost feels normal to me again after that long generation that stretched out about a year or two too long IMO. Games were struggling to even hit 30fps consistently near the end. RE6 falls into the teens often on the 360/PS3

A 4K console at this point will likely be what the PS4 and Xbox One are to 1080p. Struggling to reach that resolution at the desired framerate. If we're lucky in 2017 we will get the first PC graphics cards that will run games @ 60 FPS in 4K. The new Xbox is said to be a 6 teraflop GPU. The GTX 1080 is a 9 teraflop card and can't really do 4K 60 FPS without sacrifices. What I'm saying is there is no rush to put out a 4K console because the tech isn't quite there yet. What you'll end up with in 2017 is an expensive console that will barely do 4K at 30 FPS. Why bother? Why not wait until 2018 give these consoles their proper 5 years and move on?

Low frame rates are better. When you was playing old games and mad shyt was happening and the game slowed down it felt like you were really fukkin shyt up :wow:
Imagine it with the latency on PS NOW :blessed:

4K 60fps is an obtainable goal, but it's basically a strawman here since 30fps is "good enough" for console games. "sacrifices" are also good enough for console games. and I don't mean that as a dis, cause it's just the reality of the situation. it doesn't need "all ultra" PC settings to succeed. M$ has the Win10 store for that :troll:

So they're putting out stronger consoles because 1080p 60 FPS ain't happening on these. So the logic is let's struggle the same way we are now at 4K instead? They're also rushing to do this when 4K TV adoption is very low.

Also if we're being honest the problem is still the same problem that they faced when the PS4 and Xbox One came out. When the Xbox 360 came out it was top end technology in comparison to what was available on PC. These new mid-generation refreshes aren't top end. They'll both still be underpowered in comparison to what a top end gaming PC can do. Top end on a gaming PC right now is 9 or so teraflops the PS4 Neo is 4.20 or so and the Xbox Scorpio is 6. By the time the Scorpio is out top end gaming PCs will likely be slightly over 11 teraflops if you go with the 1080 ti or next Titan being 25% better than the 1080 card.

We're talking about the PS4 being at the level of a GTX 980 a card that came out in 2014 the Xbox Scorpio will be on par with a 980 ti a card that came out in 2015 and it'll be 2017.

They should have waited an extra year. It wouldn't have been that big of a deal. At least that extra year would have had the upper mid-tier cards pushing 4K at 60FPS. Instead we're getting more tweener tech.

So now spec dont matter.

As long as its 1080p\60 frames

:snoop:

xb1 and nintendo fans have been loving and enjoying there games while sony fans seem to have ripped into anything that wasn't 1080p\60fps because the ps4 could hit it more so than the other systems ("why would i buy a inferior version of the game when I can get it in 1080p" on ps4)

I've told people that aren't heavy gamers to get a xb1 bundles with tv's and multi games only to be told "every says the games look better on ps4" and to have people on forums debate up and down about having the strongest system.

Now that another system possible 2 with the NX might take the spec lead

"Is this what we want?"
"Is this a good idea?"

All while ready to buy a ps4.5 and VR:mjlol:

Seems ironic how hyped up Xbots are about the Scorpio when not too long ago y'all didn't care about graphics. Now suddenly y'all can't wait to buy it and a 4K :mjlol:

Nah in reality he's right. There's virtually no point in them putting out 4K consoles in 2017 because the game hardware tech is still struggling to get to that point where performance is smooth and the owners of 4K TVs are a niche market for console gamers. Estimates are by 2019 34% of homes will have 4K in them. Of that 34% likely an even smaller percentage will actually be gamers.
everything you just said they said when 360 was gonna include HD

how young are you breh?

The reality is 1080p is good enough. Movies and TV look fine at 1080p. I got a 4K TV but I don't watch any 4K content on it. I actually have the PC plugged up to it set to output at 1080p because Windows still has scaling issues at 4K.
what a dumb statement, they said the same shyt when Bluray was coming to PS3, idiots said nah DVD 480p is good enough.

so you have a 4k tv, but you dont want a console that has 4K abilities? you're dumb breh,

4K isn't the switch from SDTV to HDTV all over again. It's a bit different than that. 4K at this point is a complete luxury item. The government isn't mandating that all TV channels air in 4K and that stores stop selling the older non-4K TVs by a certain date. Then there's also the convince of switching from large heavy tube TVs to small thin HDTVs. There were factors that drove HDTV adoption up way faster than UHD adoption will go up at.

I'm not really interested in them rushing some tweener console to market that can barely run games at 4K without major sacrifices to get them at playable framerates just so they can say they have a 4K console on the market. GPUs need to mature a bit more and they're rushing this.

I don't own a 4K TV because I was even looking to get a 4K TV. It's like my TV is also 3D and I wasn't necessarily looking for that either. I had a couple thousand to spend on a TV and the upper tier TVs are all 4K. I wanted the best I could get for the money I had and that TV was it. The TV is curved too and I didn't really want a curved TV either. The not curved step down model had twice the input lag so I passed on it.
