Is 4K really the way to go for Scorpio/Neo? Digital Foundry thinks it's not worth it

Do you have a 4K TV?

so there will never be a console that can run everygame @ 4K60?? even in 20 years or something? :dahell:
It's not the hardware it's the devs.

No matter the resolution, if they can push more stuff at 30fps they will make that decision.

60fps isn't even that important for the majority of console games.

I still think NEVER is a ridiculous statement...we will reach a point where gfx are photorealistic and the extra power being outputted will be for FPS

Exactly. Xbox gamers have been telling these clowns this since the past 3 years, yet these disingenuous Sony stans continued to act as if 1080p/60fps is the defacto standard, and any game not meeting that would be trash. As a gamer that has a powerful gaming PC, X1, and the PS4, the gaming experiences on the three platforms are extremely close, despite the minor graphical differences. Hell, Ryse and Quantum break look better than 95% of the titles on PS4 or PC, yet it's being rendered on the weakest console.

The entire 4K vs 1080P argument is extremely overrated. 4K should be reserved for gaming and tech enthusiasts. It shouldn't be the standard, because it puts needless hardware demands on gaming. Nintendo will likely take the next gen IMHO.

This may happen if both Microsoft and Sony destroy each other. The idea of incremental hardware upgrades is an unpopular one. Sega tried this and failed miserably. I just can't see PS4/XB1 owners wanting to buy a Neo/Scorpio mid generation. The economy is bad. People can't afford to spend so much in gaming. People may want to seek out low cost alternatives.

I grew up playing video games. I really don't like what the industry has become today. People are just way too hyper obsessed with graphics. I've seen people outright dismiss a game for not running 60 frames per second. There's no concern for gameplay, fun factor, story, music, replayability, art style, etc. Just a new generation of gamers with tunnel vision.

4-5 years IS a generation...not a mid generation. Last generation was the exception to this rule.

If you have been playing games as long as you say you have then the PS4 NEO and XBOX Scorpio should not be of any surprise to you.

Also, do you realize that the Wii U is basically dumping their current system for the NX in 4 years as well?

Blame the PS4 stans for that one.

Again, it appears only Nintendo is truly concerned with innovative game quality.

In all my years of being alive this might have been the quickest generation I've experienced. I remember the PS4 coming out like it was yesterday yet I don't recall any memorable games from this gen. This gen went by really fast.

Well you'd expect the next system to be called 'Playstation 5' and 'Xbox Two". So this incremental approach is a bit of a surprise.

Also, do you realize that the Wii U is basically dumping their current system for the NX in 4 years as well?

Well the Wii U failed so they have no choice. I feel that the move into new hardware by all 3 companies is premature.

Like I mentioned before, the xbox was killed after 4 years and the gamecube was killed after 5 years and that was considered normal. I am in the minority here, but I actually think it's better this way. It is just a change the console crowd is not used to. The PC-LIKE model was inevitable IMO.

In the past 4-5 years was a generation and the best triple AAA support will disappear almost immediately. With the approach Sony and Microsoft are taking now...you are still looking at about 7-8 years with AAA titles support even if it's considered the weaker of the boxes each company has out. Don't like it? Upgrade or get the full 7-8 years of support of the current console you have.

The first 2 or so years of the PS4 and XBO the PS3 and 360 got most of the same AAA titles. The difference being that the last generation ports were usually handled by different teams. The next generation versions could be a bit more ambitious. Now your last generation ports will instead be current generation games that entirely reduce the scope of said games because they'll all be developed by a single team and one sku will have to run on all the hardware. By Sony's mandate you can't have exclusive Neo features.

The PS3 and 360 indirectly held back the PS4 and XBO. Now the Neo and Scorpio will be directly held back by the PS4 and XBO because they'll all be running the exact same games.

This is dumb.

The previous gen isn't holding anything back. That's just a narrative you heard from the cacs on neogaf.

Even if that was true and stuff like Watch Dogs didn't happen the PS4 and XBO will hold back their successors if the software has to run on both. Games will be designed with the lowest common denominator in mind.

I would still prefer they give these consoles their two extra years then cut them loose. We don't need these extended generations. If you spent $400-$500 on a box and it lasted 4-5 years you got your money's worth. That's a $100 or less a year cost.

The lowest common denominator is PC.

You just spent all thread talking about how 4k is for enthusiasts, so now why would advocate devs making games that can't scale below enthusiast level?
