Is Chrono Trigger too dated to play for the first time in 2016?

Magus was supposed to be in it. For some reason Square aborted that but kept the actual model they were considering using for him and renamed the character. The only thing I remember about that game other than not really liking it back when I played it was to beat it and get the real ending you had to play elements in a certain order on the last boss and that the whole game was a quest to rescue Schala and the female pirate was Schala's clone or something.

The creators felt that there was too many playable characters to really develop Magus's storyline.

Chrono Trigger named the feature, but NG+ goes as far back as the NES Zelda games.

I like some of the connections of the lore between the two, but it's sparse.

I didn't really like Chrono Cross's art style, battle system, and number of characters.

And I'm a huge Suikoden fan since the original PS 1.

If you read up more on the connections between the two concerning the lore, it's more enjoyable story wise. But I'm still disappointed with it.

Too bad they never did anything with that Chrono Break trademark.
