Is El-P an insufferably wack CAC or a genius?

:russ: thats a name I aint heard in a million years. His delivery was a little dull but he had those lyrics you had to listen to like 20 times to fully understand....double and triple meanings and shyt.
"On the mic I got more presence than attendance in a class of schizophrenics."

That line was fire back in the days though.

aight, that second beat is real dope but that first beat sounds like it was made by a machine

because it was

his production's pretty good in that it comes close to approximating the bomb squad but as for his rapping, there's only so many ways you can listen to him say 'fukk you' before it just gets annoying, especially (and really just) in his rtj work

so to answer the title, he's both

I land somewhere in the middle though I lean towards the former. i mean, look at him.

CoFlow was TERRIBLE too. maybe 4 dope songs. They ARE POTS AND PANS BEATS. Them. When dudes made fun of pots and pans rap it was Co Flow. Now, his solo stuff was waaaaaay better and the CanOx album was crazy but is he worthy of the praise? He's irritating me on Twitter right now with talk of dimensions and stupid shyt so I made a thread. I also never know what the fukk he's saying when he raps. Nor care, really.
I'm gonna tell you my El-P experience... just cause I know you've been around since the beginning.

I'm from Toronto. Funcrusher Plus was an HMV import breh (shyt was like $35 bucks)... always went in there after school... looked at Funcrusher Plus for like 3 months. Finally... bought the shyt. Took it home like fukk WHAT IS THIS. Spent $35 bucks though... took it in slowly over the next couple months. Digested about 6 tracks out of it. Wasn't completely happy, but it was cool to discover these nikkas.

Fast forward... Soundbombing II; Patriotism. I thought that track was fukkin dope... so I'm like ok these nikkas are back and this shyt dope... I'll check for em. Fast forward to Cold Vein. I'm looking at the cover for months not knowing who these guys were... but I always looked at covers. Discovered somehow it's produced by El-P. I was like... ok El-P we gon give you another spin - this is after a whole summer of just staring at the cover as I usually did. Beginning of next school year I cop... Cold Vein is probably in my top 25 all-time. Fantastic Damage drops. I'm like wow this guy can actually release some dope music.

At this point the beats are enough to make me buy El-P music when it drops. I grab Collecting the Kid which is OK... I'll Sleep When You're Dead is meh... Cancer 4 Cure is meh...

His rapping is what it is... I'm not looking for anything Nas-esque... he's on some space shyt but that's El-P. But to me, he's capable of some bangers - if you're into that style.

He came at a good time for me... the change was nice. He's definitely not for everybody... but I think he's dope because he really is an alternative to what you hear everyday.

This reminds me when I first started posting here or any other forum. These fools used to TRASH anything that wasn't supremely left field uber experimental hip-hop(HipHopInfinity if I remember correctly). Had an infamous list that had Sage Francis as the best rapper at the time, and thought the likes of Biggie, 2 Pac, Nas, Jay Z etc. were wack or average because they didn't rap about mega photovoltaic photon gamma rays and shyt. Some good music came out of it(Atmosphere, El P production, JMT) but for the most part they were as disposable as the commercial shyt we trash because there's not staying power in it.

I've only skimmed Co Flow and Cannibal Ox. I've just heard the recent stuff, solo and with Killer Mike.

Based on that he's an insufferable CAC. His voice, subject matter, and general persona he puts out are WOAT hip hop CAC level. Imagine the kind of person who's really feeling El-P's rapping; relates to what he's saying or thinks it's cool or whatever. After doing that, how can you still want El-P in hip hop?

I listen to the Run The Jewels albums when they drop, I never end up playing them after a few weeks though. His production is tolerable but doesn't resonate with me. Or at least, not enough for me to suffer through his CACery.

After Company Flow broke up, I never checked for El-P. None of his solo shyt I found even slightly interesting. Having said that, Funcrusher Plus is probably in my personal top 10. I cant tell you how many times I've played that album over the years. I still remember biking like 10 miles late at night souped as hell to go buy it when I finally found out they were the dudes who made Infokill and Tower Records were the only local spot carrying the album when it dropped.

Btw, whoever said J-Treds is wack is buggin like a mufukka. Treds had quotables for days, which is amazing considering he only dropped 1 12" and a handful of guest verses.

In retrspect all those underground CACS that use to get praised in the underground years back were pretty wack.

They were wack back then.
They just had payola and the most supreme media influence to create a fake grassroots movement.

That off beat/on beat shyt was his style tho. He wasnt on some Silk The Shocker, or 9th Prince from Killarmy shyt with it tho. It was more like an off-cadence type delivery. I thought it worked well for him, but he had some of the illest one-liners and punchlines from that time I ever heard.

im listening to Company Flow | Funcrusher Plus right now for the first time, i like it
, the beats sound very chill and laid back

8 Steps to Perfection:ohlawd:

8 steps was good, can't even front on it. I first heard it on dj premiers mixtape (can't remember the name of it)

I'm not really big on RTJ but I have no problem with him getting some money and recognition since he's been grinding for 20+ years
