Legend is a bit strong and premature but he got a hell of a discography and a few personal classics (Piñata, Bandana, Fetti and Alfredo). I’ll always check for new Gibbs regardless of the goofy shyt he be on.

It's too early for legend.

But dude's had a wildly successful career, so far. Really the kind of career that most rappers could only dream of having. He's learned how to market out of his own pocket, and he's consistently dropped quality and classic projects for years. He's been able to do both the indie and major label thing without selling off his publishing or rights, so he's always been free to do a lot of projects whenever he's wanted without having to worry about recouping budgets and waiting on the green light from a parent company to add on to his catalogue.

He could teach a lot of these rappers how to operate in the business, and still be successful, without selling out to the majors. Gibbs has been able to do what a lot of MC's haven't been, for over 18 years, without major backing. And even then, he's only grown his fanbase since the early ESGN days. Nominated for Grammy's and has had Billboard hits along the way. Gibbs has been winning crazily for years.
I can't agree that 18 years is too early for legend status. This post is overall solid though.

My thing is, I don’t think early on he was as impactful as he would be later.

As of late, I think he's really starting to build on that legacy. I started f*cking with his music back in the Midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik days, but I don’t know if most people knew he even existed then. What I respect is that he's been building up to legendary status over the years, but I would say he really started taking off like a decade ago.

People dont even know who dude is

And that means less than ever now so that's not necessarily a sleight... but becoming a legend requires some level of notoriety... he name bubbles behind antics more than music

As someone who doesn't give a shyt about his non-music antics, I think he has one of the best, if not the best, discographies of any artist in the modern era. He's probably in my all time top 15.

With that said, I don't even know what legend means any more. It seems a little early to call him one right now, but we also live in an era where damn near every milestone in hip hop has already been crossed, and it doesn't seem like there's much he could do to solidify himself for the future. The quality is there, but he's never been a huge name. He's never going to have a hit record, or put out whatever today's equivalent of a platinum album is. He's beefing with the people who should be his peers and working with an industry pariah. I guess if he gets a Grammy, or drops another classic or two, it could become near undeniable, but he doesn't have a new direction that he will take that is going to change anyone's mind. He's not an innovator. He's not breaking any molds, and he's not going to be uber influential to the next generation. The guy just makes dope music and talks a lot of dumb shyt, and there's not much else to him.

All I can say is that the music is great, I don't really think the label matters.

I remember there was a laughable thread on here comparing Freddie and MF DOOM.

I'll never forgive the niccas that said Freddie was better than DOOM. Them folks was out of their damn minds :scust:

No. He has an amazing discography so far. Cold Day in Hell, Piñata, Bandanna, Alfredo, Fetti.

All top tier projects.

If he was more influential he could have a case. We should revisit this in 3 years.
