the whole point of making more money is so you can be financially independent sooner.

i'd rather make 50k self-employed with no boss and pick my hours, rent a decent condo, no car, and have enough for one decent vacation a year than make 100k reporting to an a$$hole boss but live paycheque to paycheque with a big house and fancy car.

Life isn't about how much you make. It's about who you are as a person. If you live life within your means, then you don't have to worry about being deep in debt and going on fancy vacations, driving expensive cars, and living in an expensive home isn't important.

This, in Houston my $45k supported me and my wife while she was in school full time and we still lived relatively comfortable. We were still able to go on vacation, afford two car notes and a cash car and still go out on the weekends we just couldn't make it rain while she wasn't working. Now that she is we are headed to Europe for thanksgiving, went to Tokyo in February, and Costa Rica for her bday in May.

I am a corporate manager of warehousing for a very big company. Easy to get into but takes about 5-10 years to get where I'm at. I've been doing it for 7-8 years. Honestly I should be be making 30K more, the company I work was recently bought out and changed its compensation philosophy (the catch is my bonus is 35%). Hence why I'm set for life long-term, just kinda screwed right now. Work is very stressful...more so because of the circumstances of my organization rather than the actual job.

Never made more than 31K in a year. Not quite 30 yet.

Simply put, I chose what field I chose and that was that. The bills get paid (and believe me, sometimes shyt is hella tight, but it works out), I don't really go hungry and I've begun to learn what I truly need to be comfortable going forward. I always want more money, but to be honest? For me and my spending habits/current situation, I should be able to do whatever I want to do when I want to do it and save and all that without having to make more than say, 45K or so.

Disclaimer: 50k in all markets are not equal. For instance 50k is a very comfortable life thru much of the south while 50k will have you living like a bum in nyc or sf....

A better measure of success would be, how do you stack up against the median income for your area and your field..

You can make 50k here (Michigan) especially if you don't pay through the nose to live in some exclusive suburb, and be pretty comfortable. If your significant other is making that too, then life should be pretty good. If not, you fukking up somewhere.
