IT/cyber security/coding brehs….. I need serious help…. PLEASE

I am interested in hopping into IT…. Cyber security to be specific since it seems to pay more….

But I am SO LOST on what route to go…..

I know I’m not interested in hardware like that.

There are soooo many ways to get in….. should I get certs? A degree? If I should get certs, which ones should I get? Is community college a good option? Should I learn coding?

I don’t wanna do alllllll this work and studying just to come out and make 50k a year…. Hell I ALREADY make 68 - 72K a year now but I’m trying to get to that next level…..

im in frontend development and even with covid era malaise and learner burnout i managed to scam my entry position into 80k. right now 110 and realistically working 22 hours per week from home.

Yes, my team does agile work and my brother is certified i believe. Seems like simple PM work reading job titles and such but easily among the first to go in a layoff.

First you have to see if coding is right for you

by taking this course: The Web Developer Bootcamp: Learn HTML, CSS, Node, and More!

take your time to really understand the concept and build projects, rebuild those projects on ur own without help

TIP: do not rush or skip any material, do not get distracted by shiny objects.

if you can do that and finish the course, than you are a head of so many people and the world of software/programming will welcome u with open arms.


note: whether it takes you a month, 3 months, 6 months etc does not matter, what matter is you took the time to digest everything and finished the course.

It’s funny you said that… I’m actually looking into web developer courses now that include Java, CSS HTML….

i have pfesense set up on a 1gb firewall/router/switch hooked up to a 1gb modem. my desktop runs through that firewall/switch .

I have a managed switch behind that firewall router that links to internal home wifi and a proxmox server where I host vms for sec onion.

Now with pfsense I turned on snort (really good ids/ips tool that operates ahead of the pfesens firewall, provides good home security beyond just antimalware programs.

you can block ips from various locations based off of whether the ip is attempting to connect to your network or your network is connecting to it.

This is a good time to talk about splunk......


Security brehs, if your company uses splunk, find a way to learn it.


My pfsense logs go to splunk, which is a tool that allows you to take large amounts of data and alter it for your individual use case.


Like excel but far easier to user and far more at scale.

I ingest my Snort logs into splunk along with pfsense native firewall logs and other systems logs

index them, accelerate them, I have a few dashboards for investigations and searches to find niche events.


I am still wrangling with security onion as I installed the iso the other day and have had the time to tinker with it too much

Aim for a small MSP
Because you might be able to do more than a usual help desk

I've been in this thang for 25 years, i'm 41. Tier 3 Sys Admin - Mid 6figures. in DC.

Its tough to get advance in IT sometimes bcuz there are some many sectors. I'm in Govt Contracting / Intel. You're going to need to TS clearance to boot.

I'll say this, If want to make money, be good at things no one else knows how or want to do:. Unix, Solaris, Stigging, Scripting.

Learn the new hot technologies and learn a lot about it. These companies are always looking to upgrade their systems, integration and implementing new software and apps will get you paid.

Take a bullshyt job with respect IT company goes a long way to. On your resume, change the title from Helpdesk Tech to IT Support Special or something more respect. Learn about popular apps and add a some desireable skills under that job. Ex. Virtual Adminstration, GPOs, Active Directory, Backups and Restores. And be able to speak on the skills in a interview.

It seems to be more of a management / ITIL type of training. No tech skills involved. My old roommate told me yesterday Capital One in Dallas let a 1000 scrum master types go recently. That's kind of a redundant job that they don't really need.
