I think the main thing thing that fukked up Sai's career was him and Just sitting on The Greatest Story Never Told for too long. By the time the album dropped, the iron wasn't exactly hot anymore. His buzz for that album was never scorching hot, but there was enough buzz around it where it could have been in a stepping stone towards broader success in the same vein that Ready to Die and Illmatic lead to greater commercial success for BIG and Nas with their follow up records. Sai sat on that album so long that it eventually morphed into the Hip Hop version of Mayweater vs Pacquiao or Detox. I think Jay Electronica is making the same mistake right now. Rap artists can only be enigmas for so long before their core fans eventually give up on then and when that happens it's like an abortion for any aspirations of mass appeal. Kendrick Lamar is an example of someone who struck while the iron was hot. He dropped two mixtapes that were as good as any legitimate albums by any of his contemporaries, and then Section 80 turned out to be a solid debut. Rather than waste time, Interscrope and TDE went to work put out a follow up album in a reasonable amount of time to capitalize off of what already existed. To me the best way to illustrate it is going out to dinner one night, ordering an appetizer, being satisfied with it but dying for the main course. You tip your waitress well when she brings dinner on time. When it takes too long, you vow never to return.............see Saigon.
