It seems KRS-ONE is not as high on GOAT lists as he used to be

The Blaze list from 1998 had KRS at #2. I remember the editor even wrote that he was very upset that KRS was not #1.

Anyone who was around inn the 90s knows how highly KRS was regarded. Basically everything that KRS released up to and including his 7th album were top notch. I Got Next was whatever, but when you compared where KRS was at and where his contemporaries were at, it was incredible.

He was/is nowhere even close to Rakim on some rapping shhit, that’s for starters. He was impactful and influential in hip hop tho and has timeless stuff, he’ll always be able to be argued into some Top 10’s off that alone. But yeah, he was never my twist cause I never thought he was nice like a Ra or a G or a BDK, etc…and I ain’t with that adults tryna fk little girls shh…and the Bambaata caping, 🤢🤦🏽‍♂️. Almost makes me wanna keep him off the list totally, 🤷🏽‍♂️, but that’s not being objective.
This is all nonsense

KRS “fell off” when Jews took full control of the narrative after pushing gangster rap in the early 90s while he was out here spitting this and running the game

This is why most lists today start with members of the first generation of industry plants: Nas, 2Pac, Redman, Biggie, Prodigy, Bone, etc.

The nikkas from the rooftop pics and their regional comrades.

Yea in the 90s it was always Rakim 1 and KRS 2. But as time passes other rappers are gonna surpass them. Especially when you have more folks who didnt witness them in real time. It is what it is. There’s a reason we barely hear Wilt and Bill Russell discussed when talking about basketball greats these days.

KRS just had a wider range than Rakim and did more than Rakim in many ways:

- Larger, better catalogue of music
- More guest appearances
- Covered a wider range of subject matter
- Better live performer, by far
- Better freestyler, by far
- More involved in the political aspect of hip-hop
- More involved in hip-hop battles/beefs
- Could rap, but could also do the sing-songy reggae type stuff (Mos Def and the Fugees were the "modern" equivalent in this respect ... I am surprised more people don't recognize that KRS fathered Mos's style)

But even then, Rakim just had a certain mystique about him that was undeniable that KRS did not have. Objectively, I never thought it was fair to rank Rakim ahead of KRS. How could Rakim be the GOAT emcee when his live performances left so much to be desired? How could Rakim be the GOAT when he released relatively little music? How could Rakim be the GOAT when he was so reclusive and more or less absent from the hip-hop scene except for a few years? But at the end of the day it all comes down to opinion and feeling.

What can't be denied is that KRS and Ra were always in the GOAT conversation. KRS just fell out of favor due to his personality and due to there being no prominent "modern" emcees who were portrayed as carrying on his legacy (the way Nas and others were always presented as Rakim's heirs). It's like comparing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to Michael Jordan. Every modern player wants to play like MJ, nobody wants to shoot skyhooks. But having said that, I think I am oversimplifying things here because it discounts KRS's early work and focuses more on the persona he came to be most closely identified with.

Alot of the 80s guys arent mentioned anymore, unless its Rakim....

They been replaced by Nas, Jay Z, Biggie, Tupac, Eminem, Scarface, etc.
Rakim is the Wilt Chamberlain of hip hop: was the OG GOAT and had changed the game.

Edit: Actually, Melle Mel was the OG GOAT but Rakim's influence runs supreme.
