It seems KRS-ONE is not as high on GOAT lists as he used to be

I don't like KRS no more 'cause he just think he's too dope. He let his ego take over his shyt and that's what brings him down. When he was like that [shouts "Blow it to yourself"], when he was like that, then he was a ten but now, 'I am Hip Hop'!!! Eat a dikk nicca. Eat a muthaphukkin' dikk!

Its maybe not right, but I think a lot of his away from music preaching/ranting made people be ah f*** this guy. At least thats how I felt.
I think this probably was his biggest issue. He became too "high and mighty" to a lot of people and rubbed nikkas the wrong way and hurt his public perception.

I DONT REMEMBER SEEING KRS
IN ANYONES TOP 5 BUT HIS OWN.

HE USED TO BE VERY VOCAL
ABOUT HIS PLACE IN HIP HOP
AND MAYBE THAT FOOLED YOU
INTO THINKING HIS PERCEPTION WAS REALITY

I think that most of the greats from the 80s are not rated as highly as they should be.

With Rakim, for whatever reason, it became fashionable at some point to refer to him as the standard bearer for emceeing. I am convinced that many people who cite Rakim as Top 5 or Top 3 or whatever don't actually know his music and/or like it or appreciate it. They just drop Rakim's name so that they sound knowledgeable. It is analogous to the way that people will drop the names of basketball players from decades ago who they actually know very little about.
False.

Rakim's lyrical style aged the best due to influencing so many rappers ahead of him.

So you think KRS is as nice as Ra and G and BDK? 🤷🏽‍♂️, alright. And you don’t agree with my disgust regarding “13 and Good”? Copy.

Aren’t you the kid that said Lupe is a terrible rapper? 😂, you clearly don’t know what you’re talking about regarding niceness…or just unable to be objective. Do your thing tho, you gotta know I don’t care, lol, 🤷🏽‍♂️

His catalogue is better than those dudes

When Blaze Magazine did the top 50 rappers of all time in 1998, KRS-One was number 2 behind Rakim

When MTV did the top 10 rappers of all-time in 2006, KRS-One was number 6

When The source did the top 50 Mcs (or lyricist, I can't remember how it was titled) of all-time he was 7th

So he was consistently in the top 5-10 in most publications

Unpopular opinion but I never liked this nikka:scust:
I think people (including himself) propped him up because of his consciousness and honesty.

That doesn't make you the greatest rapper.

Kinda like Stephen A. Smith believing he's always right because he's always loud.

False.

Rakim's lyrical style aged the best due to influencing so many rappers ahead of him.

KRS had just as much influence.

The difference is KRS has stayed around releasing material and giving lots of interviews, and he comes off to too many fans as overbearing and preachy and annoying. (KRS's personality also hurt his likeability back in the day.) Rakim has been very low key and has rarely released new material, so he hasn't done much to "spoil" his image.

If you put aside personalities and put aside material that was produced in Larry Holmes Studios, and if you compare what KRS and Rakim did pre-2000, KRS has the better catalogue.

The Source 100th issue (LL cover), fans voted Top 5 MC's and KRS was #2. This was 1998.

1. Rakim
2. KRS
3. Big
4. Pac
5. LL

I could agree with people who say the perception of KRS hurt him because he was a monster on the mic. I remember Big Daddy Kane said that KRS was who he really wanted to battle back in the day, not Rakim.

Anyone who thinks KRS isn't that nice should go back and listen to his older work. Edutainment is a five-mic album.
