Air superiority is a myth against any country with modern sophisticated/complex AD & SAMs.
You can achieve air superiority against countries like Iraq & Afghanistan but against a peer - it’s impossible. It sounds good on paper but executing it is a different thing entirely. There’s a reason why NATO ruled out a no-fly immediately after the war started.
This war devolved into trench warfare cos Ukraine spent 8 yrs building sophisticated trenches with tunnels & fortifications in the Donbass area. The area was already a fortress from the Soviet era cos it was the Soviet’s last line on defense before Russia. The area is also littered with sophisticated SAMs.
During the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, Iraq had a variety of air defense systems, including surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), anti-aircraft guns, and radar systems. These systems were primarily Soviet-era equipment that is still being used in Russia today!!!
In addition to SAMs, Iraq had a significant number of anti-aircraft guns, including the ZSU-23-4, which was a 23mm mobile anti-aircraft gun. Iraq also had a number of fixed anti-aircraft guns, including the Soviet-made S-60 57mm anti-aircraft gun still being used by Russia today!!!
Overall, Iraq's air defense systems were not particularly effective against the US and coalition forces, which had a significant technological and tactical advantage. Many of Iraq's air defense systems were destroyed in the opening stages of the war, and US and coalition aircraft were able to operate with relative impunity for much of the conflict.
During the invasion, many of Iraq's air defense systems were quickly overwhelmed by the sheer volume and sophistication of US and coalition air power. The exact numbers of air defense systems destroyed or disabled during the conflict are not publicly available, but it's clear that the US and coalition forces were able to gain air superiority relatively quickly.
Department of Defense has reported that coalition forces carried out over 41,000 sorties and dropped more than 22,000 bombs and missiles during the initial "shock and awe" campaign. This campaign aimed to neutralize Iraq's air defenses and strategic infrastructure, including power plants and communication centers.
In the early days of the conflict, U.S. forces targeted Iraq's air defense systems with a combination of cruise missiles, precision-guided bombs, and electronic warfare assets. This allowed U.S. and coalition aircraft to operate with relative impunity, and enabled them to strike targets on the ground with precision and accuracy.
Overall, the air campaign against Iraq's air defense systems was a significant success for U.S. and coalition forces, allowing them to gain air superiority and operate with minimal threat from Iraqi air defenses.
Russia uses none of those SAMs. If Iraq had S-300, it would’ve wrecked American airforce.
Just take theL comrade.
Are you on drugs breh?
