Let's say you do the diet thing without any extra physical activity such as working out or treadmill work. You can be skinny, but if your body doesn't have more muscle than fat, then you will have a gut, and look flabby. When you are younger, you have more testorone and a faster metabolism, which is why young people have nice bodies without putting in much work.
