The appeal of an artist to me is the music they make you dumb c*nt. Their label has nothing to do with.Not to mention you can be signed to a major and still drop projects independently. They weren't going around bragging about being independent (as if it matters anyways), it was the fans. And like someone said most of the so called "independent" dudes are signed on the low these days long before the deals are announced.

of course you can release indie records while signed to a major.

this the 1st time i ever heard of kendrick like 2 and a half years ago

just bc you never heard of kendrick lamar doesn't mean he wasn't grinding for years INDEPENDENTLY. he released music dating back to 2003 when he was still k-dot and schoolboy q has music dating back to 2008. that's not the definition of an industry plant for the record too. like someone else said you can still sometimes release music independently when signed, but it is a lot harder bc record labels can make money of the singles these days though. since, artist are usually continually making music they could have a project completed or near completion when they get signed. thus, the label doesn't necessarily own it. you also don't need to be signed to major label to get in the studio with major artist and producers even though it can definitely help.
