As far as the Kendrick/Cole debates...like let's be fukking real here, J. Cole is extremely surface-level with his shyt. He's probably superior as a pure rapper but on pretty much every level as an artist J. Cole isn't on Kendrick's level and it shows in their catalogues.
The idea of J. Cole is better than the genuine article
I want to speak on this where I strongly disagree. I will say, Kendrick as a recording artist is greater than J. Cole. Dot has amazing ideas and concepts for his songs and music. But he's VERY MUCH SURFACE LEVEL. There's isn't anything deep in what Kendrick does. This is what Lupe been arguing who isn't at all surface level and arguably more lyrical than Kendrick in terms of ideas and concepts. Kendrick is more Joyner Lucas but more marketable.
In contrast, J. Cole isn't trying to be cryptic. He's straight forward. And a lot of fans appreciate the direct and forwardness of his songs. Whereas Kendrick has a gimmick where people must decode whatever meaning he's putting out. Sometimes people be making up or misinterpret it when it's never that deep to begin with.
At the end of the day, I judge things as who's the better MC. Not recording artist, but actual EMCEEING. Being that MC that moves and touch the crowd. And time and time again, J. Cole gives people something that has struck accord to their lives. This trunk tour documentary series is evident of how these fans truly honor what Cole has done for them and their lives. You have people making live decisions due to song's music, feel inspired, naming their newborns after them and so on. It's something I rarely seen with other rappers. Kendrick included even though I'm sure he has his fans, but nothing that I've witnessed with J. Cole and his fanbase. That's what MCs supposed to be, to move the crowd.
