I don't know the state of the education system in Jamaica, is are there no engineers, construction companies, or Jamaican investors? :gucci:
Why do these islands continue to feed into these "structural adjustment" policies from Europe and East Asia? :scust:

A lot of people either don't know the historical, geo-political, and economic constraints Jamaica has. Jamaica has always been in a REALLY TOUGH SPOT.

To answer your question Jamaica got independence from Britain in 1962 but was left mired in debt since its inception. Theres a really good doc called Jamaica Life and Debt that breaks this down.

Jamaica also had to be careful about the politics we chose. It's US national security that the Caribbean is under American influence. This is why they went so hard at Cuba and why they're always meddling in Caribbean and Latin America. And remember at least Cuba has Latin American (Hispanic) ties. Norman Manley could've turned Jamaica socialist but US (and maybe the UK) would've likely brought "democracy". Especially during the Cold War.

So now Jamaica needed to borrow money to make investments in infrastructure and improve their economy. They had to go to the IMF. In order to get money the IMF will only let us borrow if we agree to terms which open up our economy aka "structural adjustments". I could go on and on about the various segments of the economy that's foreign owned.

So let's recap:
  • We're in debt since Independence from Britain
  • We can't choose our political model due to our location so close to US
  • We can't choose benificial fiscal policies because IMF
Now enters China. It was relatively recently the Chinese were as poor as us and now they're a rising superpower. They haven't committed any historical wrongs against Jamaica and they provide an alternative to the existing world order. I can't really blame the Jamaican government for dealing with them.

A few years back Obama came to Jamaica, and many believe (including me) it was spurred by Chinas growing influence. The US can't afford to have a Chinese colony so close to them so it will be interesting how they approach us.

Yet another example of the consequences of persistent individualism losing to generational collectivism
"we all we got" has unfortunately become a cliche and only is internalized and expressed in symbolism, during the most extreme cases of white supremacy. While it's a social, political, and economical glue for other communities

After breaking from Queen Elizabeth, how do you then set your countries future on a path of colonialism. Especially when you have recent examples of what China's "loan" really means

Was Jamaica request for a loan turned down by African countries? I know not all African nations are severely hindered by debt

The one thing I support Trump for is putting America interest before any other country

Shottas 3?

Vs the Triads? :gladbron:

Lmao....

I'd put money on the Triads...

The infrastructure and power of the posses full of SHOTTAS and RUDEBWOIS has diminished greatly since all the Dons have been locked up or killed (dudus..zeekes..) or assimilated into the legal life (George Phang..Skeng don)

And we all know how things didn't turn out well for the Yardies when the Colombians decided to pull up on Black Roses :francis:

Here's the thing I wonder about though.

Gov't intervenes to save major investments in sugar industry

Sugar industry has huge losses, Sugar worldwide is doing bad.Chinese come in to swoop.

Air Jamaica going out of business? - Jamaica Forum - TripAdvisor

Air Jamaica is doing bad, sells to T&T where it's now headquartered.

Wehby for Order of Distinction

This dude apparently oversaw the sale of AJ.

In both cases, the investors looked at the deals and said :francis: before selling to foreigners.

Innovation, capital, persistence, loyalty, nationalism, and disruption didn't stop them, but the numbers did.
Most people talked about how the country was selling off everything, but local elites can't or won't come in as angels, then what do you then?

No way that mansion cost 250 usd. That mansion will probably cost like 1 million usd in Nigeria. IF THAT
