LMAOOO @ 2002-2003 being Nelly

Bad News, In Da Club, Wanksta, etc. was already out in 2002...the whole summer of 2002 was 50 easily, let alone earlier that year with all the G-Unit mixtapes

And Em never "ran" those years...he always shared them with others...record sales wise he did smash the charts those years though

Charlamange (ugh) is also correct that while 98 and 99 were the years where the term "DMX the game" came from, Jay was HEAVY in rotation at that time

In fact I'd reason that 98-00 was the reason why so many people hated this nikkas guts
wrong 50 cent buzz came like in nov 2002 going into 2003 hot in here by nelly and dilema rule the summer of 2002

kendrick definitely 2017 and none is coming close.

-Damn is the best selling album of 2017, in any genre (the billboard charts ended in november so the taylor swift album doesn't count)
-Damn is the most acclaimed album of 2017
- Humble is the 2nd best selling single of 2017
-Humble went #1
-DNA went #4
-Love is slowly ranking up as we speak, and it's about to top the urban and rhythmic radio. It also cracked not so long ago, with no video, no promo, only streaming demand. Interscope then decided to send the song to pop radio

humblke was already 4x platinum months ago

Kendrick got the album but he's dropped the ball. When people talk about 50's run, Wayne's run, they shut everything down. You heard them all the time everywhere. Radio, streets, clubs, ALL THE DAMN TIME. Not just one album, they had hot features, concert appearances like Summer Jams, etc. They were EVERYWHERE. If you needed a hot record you went to them. THATS what a run looks like. Thats what being the hottest out means. Not just one album and you disappear for the rest of the year.

:martin:

Kendrick dropped the ball. How you supposed to be the hottest out and yet your features mean nothing? Your features dont go nowhere? Nobody checking for you after one hot single? (HUMBLE) What other single went top 10? Come on now

Kendrick didnt drop the ball. He never had it. His whole buzz is artificial. That's why his so called reign feels so weak compared to nikkas whom really had it.

50 wasn't really a features artist because he stayed beefing with a lot of his peers. Even then, it wasn't like 50 was killing features. Another example is Kanye. Breh, didn't have a hold of the streets like that until he dropped "Can't Tell Me Nothin". Can he be denied 2004 because College Dropout wasn't exactly street certified.

Kendrick also had "DNA" which went #4.

You're missing the point. It's not just the features,it's the overall moment or lack there of. And kanye was accepted by the streets from the first album. He wasnt looked upon as being hard etc, obviously.
But College dropout was definitely bumped everywhere.
When you look at 50 or kanye, them nikkas was out the gate with iconic records. Kendrick had never dropped iconic records on any of his album's runs. His buzz is about the meme makers that interscope hires and his fake conscious image.

Look at GRODT: Many men, wanksta,in da club,P.I.M.P.,21 questions
Look at CD: Through the wire, slow jams, jesus walks, all falls down.
These were real moments

Plus look at how both shifted the culture.
50: g-unit wife beaters, spinning chains, made a bunch of non singing nikkas try to sing on hooks, made nikkas start doing their own mixtapes, had nikkas hitting the gym

Kanye: popularized the sped up soul sample, had nikkas dressing like him, first dweeby, non tough guy solist to really be respected and accepted by all, since the gangsta rap took over hiphop in the early 90's. He single handedly reinstated the "regular guy rapper" and allowed them to be equally respected and accepted as potential hiphop dons
Who's following kendrick,what did he change,NOTHING
hE'S HAVING HIS BIGGEST MOMENT NOW and really has nothing to show for it. Nothing that's going to mean anything in the future.

hot in here and dilema by nelly were bigger records than anything 50 cent put out in 2002.

Disagree. Jay had many years on top.
Absolutely.

I don't think you can base it on the original post, which seems to be based strictly off of sales. Jay was on top for several years, even if there were brief moment of sharing (or competing for) the top spot with cats like DMX (98), Eminem (2000), and Nas (2001). And even though cats like 50 sold the most in 2003, Jay had The Black Album and in the HIP-HOP COMMUNITY it felt as big as anything else that year.

1998-2001 he was killing it.
I think maybe a more interesting topic of discussion is how impressive it is that before the age of social media and the internet, Jay was able to take basically 3-4 years on top (or close to it even if you don't think he was #1) and frame it in 2003 like he had basically had a career like Michael Jordan.

It worked, and even people that weren't big Jay fans (from my memory at least) didn't ever argue with it very much.

Kendrick dominated 2017 and it's not even debattable. And I'm not even talking about rap here, I'm talking about music in general.
