I don't know if anyone will read this or respond to this or if people here are even old enough to have been there. This all started right in my late teens with me becoming an adult right at the height of this situation.
I remember Jay being on fire going into the I declare war concert. Jay absolutely killed the diamonds remix (and responded to a Fat Joe's shot on lean back with the bar "the pressure's on but guess who ain't gone crack...pardon me I have to laugh at that"). The hot 97 freestyle verse over black rob's "can I live" that everyone to this very day still seems to think was about Game turned into "Dear Summer" which was basically the most talked about song on Memphis Bleek's 534. Jay also had a monstrous 30 bar verse on the "go crazy" remix that would later replace the original on later shipments of Young Jeezy's let's get it thug motivation 101. Sometime after the concert was announced but before the concert happened Jay had a stellar verse on Bun B's "get throwed". When I heard Jay say he was going to go at someone I felt like Jay was going to rip to shreds anyone who he wanted to come after.
Across the world both online and offline many people guessed who would be targeted by Jay. Some people thought it would be Fat Joe because they had tension and shots going at each other going back to the days that Pun was still alive. Joe was even claiming to be the king of new York. Some people thought it would be 50. 50 once said he could go at both Nas and Jay for the throne. It was also rumored (and later revealed to be the actual plan) for the Lox to sign with Jay right at the height of their beef with G unit. Some people thought he was going to diss Beanie Sigel because it appeared that Beans chose to go with Dame Dash music group over Jay's rocafella and dissed them on a remix of Sheek Louch's "Kiss your ass goodbye". Apparently some people thought he would diss Nas again...but that just seemed stupid. For some reason some people said that they thought Game was talking about Jay on "Westside story" but Game made sure to constantly say that he wasn't and that he didn't diss legends. Game did say Jay could suck his dikk but he apologized. I distinctly remember Henchmen said he talked to Jay and assured everyone that Jay wouldn't diss Game.
I didn't see the footage myself but I heard that Cam and Dame were being interviewed on Bet and asked about the concert before it happened (also before Cam got shot which was I thinking 4 days before the concert). Cam supposedly said that he would end Jay's career if he went at him (which was ironic because Jay was still in "retirement"). I remember that people thought "bigger picture" originally on the mixtape scene in 2002 but also being placed on Diplomatic Immunity 2 in late 04 was about Jay. Hell some people thought Cam was talking about Jay when he said that they don't bounce in NY and that was literally in the 90s. Cam had not released an album since he left Rocafella.
I was so disappointed when Jay didn't go at anyone. I feel he used the false promise or at least the implication that he would do a diss to sell tickets to a concert. No matter how many years pass I still don't respect it....
Then early 2006 we get you gotta love it and swagger jacker. I didn't really appreciate Cam acting like he literally put it together knowing damn well that "I'm not a writer I'm a biter" was already out before he added his commentary. However I found his commentary hilarious and I think he gave it a lot more attention than it would have gotten otherwise.
With you gotta love it that sample....info was a genius. That shyt was hypnotic. You had Max on the hook before everyone was all on his dikk. A lot of the criticism was that much of the content of the song was recycled from Ether. Ether has what I consider to be poor production though. Cam's talking intro and outro combined with the clip of Beyoncé singing on a Cam hook added to the entertainment value. As much as I loved the song I felt like Jay could easily crush Cam with a response.
I remember Jay saying that the artist in him was itching to respond. Jay made sure to trash Cam in both the MTV and BET interviews with Nas (done by Sway and Toure'). I remember Jay saying that if wanted to he would respond on his own time. Cam on the outro of his track claimed Jay was making secret songs (which was a kind of reference/flip of what Jay said about Mase on "ride or die"). I also remember the video for "suck it or not" that had a portion of "wet wipes" at the end having Jimmy Walker dressed as Jay.
I remember Jay (or someone they want us to think was him...like with the tweets) having a live chat q&a on the official Rocafella website and the very first thing Jay said that Cam was just looking for attention. I remember Remy and Jae Millz talking on 66 raw and Remy saying that if Jay responded that she thinks Cam would just release several other diss tracks immediately after. I remember Chaz Williams on Black Hand radio explaining that the hip hop thing to do would be to respond and criticizing Jay for sending Tru Life to handle the beef for him. When Jim Jones dropped "alarm" DJ big mike was talking about how Jay ignored Cam and and didn't think Jim would get a response. I was baffled at Big Mike differentiating between Cam and Jim because I thought it was Jay vs Dipset the whole time. Cam even said Jay was looking for catholic school pictures of Jim and the footage of Jim getting jumped at the Rucker but couldn't find it (but Lil Cease months later put it out on one of French Montana's cocaine city DVDs before Cease and French had their own issues)
When I saw the killa season movie I remember the Jay diss playing in the beginning during the dice scene. When the first few moments of Killa Season 2 were came with the deluxe edition DVD of the album I was under the impression that both the movie and soundtrack would be out soon and Cam's version of SOS band's weekend girl was supposed to be the promotional single. Green Lantern was supposed to put out a Jay-z mixtape. Elliott Wilson said when he interviewed Jay for XXL that Jay had a certain look in his eyes whenever Cam was mentioned. I was blasting Cam's verse on his remix to Yung Joc's "it's going" in response to Jay's verse on the remix to Rick Ross' hustlin in class on the mac in the classroom.
If I had a large amount of money I would still be willing to pay it to hear a REAL response if one was ever recorded. If Jay really cared about hip hop, his wife's honor, or seeing young black people get money he should have did Cam and hip hop the favor of responding even though he felt that he would be losing even if he won.
