Thirstin Howl OG Checked me in cypher, true story.
I met him kicking it outside a venue 10 years ago, when I was still having fun with the rap thing. Everyone outside gave him the necessary tributes & salutes, then a cipher broke out. He was just chilling, listening.
I remember when it was my turn to go, I had a verse picked out in my head that I thought he would like. The only problem was, everybody paused after I finished the verse, and there was an awkward silence.
Eventually someone picked it up, then he turned to me and told me "You had it, you was supposed to go right back in". I respected it, cause he's from that cloth where you keep going until you get cut off. And an older head might let you go for like 5-6 rhymes straight, just to see where your skills are at.
So it wasn't a "G-Check", but more of an "OG Check". By 2007 ciphering was already a bit of a lost art, so I don't fault myself too much. But still it just shows how the emcees of today are so prone to having limited skillsets. I respect the business lessons being handed down from well do to guys like Jay & others. But we need the same thing on the artist side as well, because the bar is too low.
