A lot of these cats have zero understanding of how their finances work. Who was it that tried to cash his first NBA check at a check cashing spot? I think it was Z-Bo.

Broke should be required viewing at all pro sports rookie orientations.

they emphasize this stuff pretty heavily in the modern nfl/nba

back then they probably didn't have as much knowledge/resources about it

but i show no pity for dudes that make that much and squander it

shyts simple arithmetic

How do you not keep at least $1 million stashed away after making $60 million over the course of a career?

These nikkas are idiots.

You really wouldn’t understand until you had that type of money. This isn’t a problem for only “nikkaz” There are plenty of cases of rich people in other races who have gone broke

this nikka never had anywhere 60 million

plus NBA players get checks like 9-5 workers do

so if they just leave in a middle class neighborhood drive a normal car they would be able to save money and let the checks pile up

but they got have bentleys gotta live in a mansion so they spending the checks on bills as soon as they get them and never let them stack up

so you make 60 million over 16 years but you've been on a tread mill, it doesn't matter, because you never actually had millions in your possession

I dunno why they say "XYZ Athlete squandered $60 million." Taxes got a good chunk of that, so the $60 million he earned was probably more like $35-38 ish million. Most dudes should just buy a nice $400-500k-ish house, a couple of nice but not too nice cars and just sit on the money with low-risk bonds until they come up with a more detailed plan.

Besides taxes, another big issues causing the famous and rich to go broke is avoid broke people and fans.

You can't fly coach, you can't eat at Chipotle without being mobbed. You can't live in a upper middle class home. It cost to be discrete. If you party, you have to get valet everytime, you have to be in VIP. Then you usually have to have some type of security most public places you go. The money goes fast man. Than family and friends. It's not like you want to be a lone during your off time. You want female, friends and family around. You think they're paying to take off from work, to fly out and chill on their own dime? You got to take care of them.

And Im not sure if the team pays for their food and logding on the road. If not, that's a lot of money.

It's probably impossilble to spend less than 5 mil a year as a famous athlete.

NBA has a mind blowing amazing 401k plan. There are various ways to avoid this fate, via IRAs or index funds or smart/simple investments such as franchise restaurants. But none of that matters when so many black NBA players are financially illiterate, come from poverty, and are surrounded by desperate relatives.

It's easy to waste money when you never had money. People are acting like he got a lump sum of 60mil. Nah he got a few million yearly, and a large portion of that went to taxes. He didn't pocket 60mil, I doubt that was his net gross. Now add in either paying taxes late so you get late fees, not paying taxes at all so you get fukked by the IRS, or paying wack accountants who steal from you. Add in all the money he gave away to family members. The bad business decisions he made because his uncle had an "idea." The big house with big expenses. The six figure cars. Maybe he bought a yacht too, who knows. All that adds up to becoming broke when you aren't watching your money.

For all the 6'9 Coli brehs who will make the league soon: max your 401k contribution yearly. Look up a reputable accounting firm, NOT some local accountant with a small office on the corner somewhere. Talk to a financial planner or advisor at a reputable place like Charles Schwab, Vanguard, Merril Lynch etc. Invest in an index fund, like the Vanguard one. Pay your taxes - remember if you buy a house with cash you have to pay property taxes yearly. Don't bust nuts in women you aren't married to. Get a high yield savings account and throw some money in there yearly. Instead of giving money to family every time they ask, set up a trust fund for the family members you fukk with.
