All players have a role.
Dirk had a role, Terry had a role, Chandler had a role, and Kidd had a role.
I agree. Kidd, Terry and Marion were role players. That's all I'm saying.

With your logic, Chris Bosh and D-Wade are role players to LeBron.
Or Scottie Pippen.
How you figure? Granted with the way they've played lately it can seem like it.
How do you define "role player"?
A role player is someone like J.J. Barea or Mike Miller. You mention Jason Terry, but fail to mention that Jason Terry has been a borderline All-Star his whole career(was snub a lot). Terry carried the team in scoring in a lot games, in the 2006 & 2011 playoffs runs. Teams had to game plan for Jason Terry. Terry was always second in scoring to Dirk. You clearly never watched any Mavericks games, if you thought Terry was a role player. He was the Mavericks second threat. That's like calling Dirk a role player when Finley and Nash was on the team.
Back to Shawn Marion. He wasn't asked to score a lot of points when Joe Johnson was on the Suns roster. But when Joe Johnson left, he was fully capable to up his offensively efforts.
Got damn stat geeks thinking they know the fukking game better than coaches based on some fukking numbers. No coach ever won a ring by paying attention to that analytics shyt.
Miller is a bench guy, when you're regularly dnp'd you're not a role player. I thought the same of Barea.
I was talking Marion on the Mavs. He was clearly a role player at that point. Gave them next to nothing on offense and probably a bit overrated defensively at that point.
I can see the Terry argument, even though on the second Mavs run he was past his prime imo, they did ask to him handle the scoring load after Dirk, but he was extremely one dimensional, (easily replaceable by a bunch of guys in the league).
And Kidd was definitely a role player at that point.
Shutting down the best player in the NBA in the 4th quarters of the NBA finals games is overrated. Shutting Down Kobe in Game 3 & 4 is overrated.
@ a veteran player who won the Six Man of the Year with a lot of deep playoffs experience being replace by anybody.

What is your point?![]()
Come on man... Marion shut down Kobe? Really?
And we all know Lebron bytched up, had nothing to do with the Matrix guarding him.
You acting like Marion was Ron Artest in his prime during that run.![]()
baseball is a stat game because a hitter vs. a pitcher is a one on one event that accurately gauges the individual ability of both, with minimal interference from other variables or influences. In basketball, literally hundreds of variables are all interacting at one time, to determine the success of individual players. Individual performances do not exist in a vacuum like baseball. Defensive pressure and adjustments, coaching/offense strategies, PG ability to find shooters, etc all influence performance.
Stat nerds in bball want to be the next bill james, so they have tried to shoehorn adv stats into the game. I echo the sentiments that they have their place, as they can give you a general idea of ability, but they arent an accurate gauge. Fcking Tyson Chandler's efficiency ratings and PER are out of this world, and the boy couldnt even create his own shot in a game of nerf.
Per and efficiency also tends to heavily favor those who do the least, and non-aggressive players.
Even a tech nerd guy like Mark Cuban knows it's more to basketball than analytics.
