I was a youngin when juicy dropped but I just remember that the West Coast had the radio and the Box on lock. Juicy really was the song that began the reign of the east coast. NYC artists were getting play but that was during the hip hop hour on KYS on friday nights and what not. What Diddy and Big did with Juicy and Big Poppa was probably one of the most important factors in bringing the crown back to NYC at a time when Cube, Pac, Dre all had the game on smash

This sums it up pretty much. "Juicy" is easily a Top 10 Rap song of all time. There is no debate. It's made way to many greatest of all time list. For people saying, "Big didn't have to have a commercial single to start out". Well he didn't, remember that gritty single "Party and Bullshyt", technically, that was Biggie's 1st solo single, not "Juicy" but obviously it was too hard core for the charts. "Juicy" was the moment when the shift really happen from Dre/Snoop/Warren G to the East.

Wu and NaS both dropped amazing, grimy, gritty singles but they didn't do well on the charts. "Juicy" had dudes from the South, to West and Midwest all noddin their heads. Matter of fact, "Juicy" is so well known that I was in Mexico for Spring break back in 2005 and the song came on in the club and the whole club knew the words including the locals. The song is worldwide and most rap fans know it by heart. 1st the beat is Classic. "Juicy Fruit" is a Classic RnB song. Then the Hook by Total is so inspirational, it makes you feel like you can do and be anything. Then Big's storytelling and flow was the icing on the cake.

As for people saying Big made up everything. He grew up in the hood and there was a time when his moms kicked him out the house and he was sleeping on coaches and one room shacks to survive. This myth about Big's upbringing makes me laugh. His mom was a teacher and a single mother, she ain't have dough like that. The reason the song isn't over-rated is cause of how many rap fans and non-rap fans love it. The song is like a time capsule of Hip Hop. So many quotables in the song too. "Ready To Die" didn't have a lot of mainstream songs on it but the few it did have were Timeless Classic Records and why Big is known all over the world. To me the song will never get old and live on forever. Throw Juicy on and you will get a positive response from the audience.

im not taking any sides but big catches flack for "lying" about being poor on "juicy" because he embellished.

im sure his mom didnt have it like that, but they werent dead broke like he was making it seem.

i understand where big is coming from with it. hes a rags to riches story regardless of the specifics......but you up here stanning, acting like he didnt embellish.

didnt they say big was the one on the block that had the most video games? then he got in the studio and couldnt imagine playing super nintendo & sega genesis.

No one believes Voletta Wallace, like any other mother she doesn't want to be perceived as a bad one. Dude was selling crack in every single one of his teenage years besides the once he was locked up, if he had video games he probably bought them with his own money.

Lol @ "Ohh I didn't know he was selling crack for 8 years during the crack epidemic in Bedstuy" :childplease:

He might've exaggerated a bit, but there was probably that winter when he didn't have heat (when he got his own apartment) and starving days when his mom forgot to buy food cause she was working from the morning to the night.

Actually I never said he didn't embellish, I just said that people saying it was all lies weren't accurate. It's art, and a lot of artist embellish the truth to tell a story. His mother did all she could to raise her son and gave him everything she could. But they weren't living like that. 1st a Teacher salary in the 80's wasn't that much money. She was getting zero help from Big's father at the time. Most of her money went to make sure Big had a good education cause she was a teacher.

Again there was a time where Big was basically homeless. He was kicked out of his moms house and sleeping on Pac's couch and many other friends apartments living off his little crack money cause the music money was coming slow back then. He would eventually go down south to make more money and ended up getting locked up.

"Juicy" to me is more a reflection of his surroundings. There were plenty of people Big knew that were in the same situation as his rhymes. My issues is people acting Like Big's mom was making 100k and he was living it up which is B.S. The whole point of "Juicy" was to show someone who went from nothing to something. It's one of hip hop most inspirational records of all time. The most powerful line of the song is the last line:

"Damn right I like the life I live, cause I went from negative to positive and it's all good"

The original is Classic so Diddy and Poke chopped up the beat great. But I always had a thing for "Pete Rock's" Remix which was suppose to the be original beat if you listen to Pete Rock's story of Puff hearing him chop the record at his house. "The Juicy Remix" was outshinned by the original but listen to that beat, Pete blessed Big. That ended up being their only collaboration:

his first single was Party and Bullshyt :what:

Yep. Big's 1st appearence on a song was "Bunch of N!ggas" on Heavy D album. Then his 1st single appearance was "Real Love Remix" was Mary J than of course the Supercat "Dolly my baby" joint. But it was "Party and Bullshyt" that was his 1st solo single. It came out on the "Who's The Man" Soundtrack but was only released on vinyl as a single. But it was way to hard for the charts. Biggie originally wanted "Machine Gun Funk" to be the 1st single off "Ready To Die" but Diddy said they needed a more radio friendly song. So him and Poke played Biggie the "Juicy" single and at 1st he thought the beat was too happy. After they chopped it up and got it to him he stated to like the beat.

The rest is history. Since Biggie did "Juicy" and "Big Poppa", Puff agreed to release "Warning" as a B-side Single but Biggie forced the issue and they actually made a video for it. So in the end, Big got to release a "HARD" single from the album. As for "Party and Bullshyt", it was the song that Pac fell in love with and would perform it with Big while he was coming up. It's funny, NaS and Biggie's debut singles were both on soundtracks in 1992. NaS's added "Half Time" to "ILLmatic" but "Party and Bullshyt" wasn't on "Ready To Die" cause Puff didn't want it on there. Here's the single cover:

So not having a hook would have made the song "Gritty". Juicy and Today was a Good Day are sampled from classic R&B songs, yet Juicy is somehow more R&B because of the hook. I mean All That I Got Is you is gritty as fukk and really about the struggle. It has a R&B Hook. You young nikkas are dumb. No wonder your opinions get flamed.

Ok you figure I'm a youngan how? Juicy doesn't have the same feel as all I got is u at all. Juicy to me was a commercial record at the time when dirty grimy beats was the east coast forte. It's not a record at the time I personally liked that's just my opinion though.:yeshrug:

lol @ motherfukkers in here hating on Juicy. It's pretty much everything a rags to riches song should be.

If you're not feelin' Juicy, you have no soul. Straight up.

i dont pay attention to what voletta says. i already know her angle.

iirc, it was someone that biggie grew up with that made that video game comment. either way, nobody is paying for private school if they cant put food on the table first.

yea. c/s.

"all i got is you" is a better record.

and also, it was more authentic. you just know this nicca was plucking roaches out the 'serial' box himself, while biggie gives off the impression that hes rapping about his neighbor's sardine dinners. and theres nothing wrong with that, but still.

no need to type all this.

i have no problem with the record. im just saying, dont be surprised when you see somebody calling him out for lying if you know that he embellished.
