Just Saw 12 years a Slave and I m furious

Like I told some you nighas before I'm gone say it again. My history does not begin with slavery in America. Its like the only excuse nikkas got to see them shyt. Ya can let slavery define ya'll but I aint and I sure wont give them my dollar to profit of that shyt. When they make a movie bout kingdoms in Africa or African folklore and or Fantasy then I'm going to watch it.

We don't learn about Kemet (egypt), African Kingdoms, Moors, or how Christianity's roots originated in Ethiopia...we learn about slavery in school first and foremost as blacks in this country...and that's where the conditioning begins.

I hear you though, we need more movies where we arnt portrayed as slaves. We wernt born on slave ships, we had powerful and wealthy nations before slavery, in fact the richest king in the history of our planet was west africa, lets not forget about all the kingdoms, nations, and knowledge reserves (e.g. the great timbuktu library) we had either. We need movies that show more positive, powerful aspects of our history so we can uplift.

Hollywood ain't looking to support movies like that though...but that needs to happen. Because there are mad ignorant folks (black and white) who will try to act like that part of our history never existed.

Ya know, I get the point of seeing a film because it represent a part of my history... However, I would like some movies that represent other aspects of our history... It isn't all struggle, how about we get some films about the kingdoms in Africa that went to war with eachother(which ultimately led to prisoners of war who became slaves in the TAST) or times when Blacks prospered? A lot of our history is based off of despair and struggle, but let's see the other side...

That's because that's how we got here in this country. That's where our history in America primarily started. With limited time and money resources in high school, there's little time for other African history topics other than Egypt (and African civilizations if you're lucky).

Movies about Africa (without white people in the cast) don't get made because no one - not even black people - would see them. It's a sad fact. We should've discussed this a couple days ago so people here could ask their families during Thanksgiving who'd want to see a Mansa Musa movie.

Hey man this shyt was based of a true story most of that shyt happened to what solomon described in his book. I don't think it was suppose to showcase how superior white people were like slavery is something you can't sugar coat shyt was fukked up and probably even worse than what you saw in the movie. I wish more black brothers watched this movie and instead of it opressing you make it empower you to achieve that black excellence sure that movie made me feel some type of way but then compared it to see how divided we are we like to kill each other, steal from each other, observe why light skin is better than dark skin and in slavery it didn't matter what shade you were if you had a tiny bit of nikka you were working in them fields. This movie made me look at it in a sense that I can't let solomon's or my ancestors name die in vain today we have our freedom and as nikkaz we shyt on each other more than any other race and we can say it's the white man's fault for it but at the end of the day this is exactly what the white man wants us to do beause there scared of tha black unity and us coming together which is what we need more of.

This. I saw the movie and felt such a range of emotions but really took from it most of the things you mentioned. A point I think a lot of us forget today is that a lot of us have a certain comfortable status in management, professional jobs, etc. parallel to the freed blacks but at the end of the day we can get that taken away. It's nice to have the nice things in life but we can't be distracted as if we are suddenly as a whole equals in this society.

And the ending was Once Solomon was able to leave that nikka was out. he aint give no fukks about no body else. He was like "peace nikkas" and hopped on that horse carriage like it was nothing. he hugged patsy for 3 seconds and dipped

I mean, did they really have to go into details about whippings and showing the slaves' backs to make whites feel the power they once had ? Now, I see why white people didn't really like Django. Django had a black alpha male who would talk back to whites during the slavery era. That didn't sit too well with them. To add, the black man was smart and killed white people. So, of course that wouldn't sit well with them.

this is some dumb ass reasoning. when you saw "What's Love Got To Do With It?" did you feel some type of power as a man every time Ike hit Tina? OR did you cringe because the shyt was fukked up. Did it make you mad when Tina hit him back? Did you feel like less of a man when J-Lo started fighting back in "Enough"

the truth of the matter is that the movie is a factual account of a man's life. I walked away feeling disgusted at the atrocities of the time and proud of Northup's resilience. showing the slaves backs makes it real. So c00ns and white people alike are forced to be uncomfortable and realize that yes, shyt was really fukked up back then.​

she would have gotten her slavery all over him.

but on a serious note those boring scenes you were suppose to empathize with his situation. And the ending was the best part becasue you felt or at least see what he felt which was relief but also guilt for his and other slaves situation.

I liked the movie but patsy's whipping scene was very hard to watch. It didn't make me that angry as I'm already familiar with racism and slavery here in America but I did learn about Solomons story as I had never heard it before. If you don't like watching slavery movies that's fine but please don't qualify that by comparing it to Django even if there was black man as the hero of the film. Django the film has been broken down numerous times by critics as showing that even though he was killing the evil white folks he was still being controlled to a degree by a white man so what is Tarantino really trying to say there? As far as wanting more positive black films out there it boils down to putting you money where your mouth is. If we go out and support black made movies they can be successful and production houses will get behind them so more can be made. Make it a point to support your people and we can all grow.
