Bruh, that's damn near any producer after they've been in the game for 20 plus years

After the outstanding run he and Chad had in the late 90's and early to mid 2000's, styles and sounds changed, producers hit points where their ideas are connecting with audiences as much or just any and everything moves in ebbs and flows

But all in all, Pharrell has done pretty good.

But no producer has been the game for as long as he has and not had some misses, that shyt is natural, it happens

After a legendary run, Stevie Wonder started making less than stellar music

No producer, writer, artist, stays on top of the their game forever.

That last N.E.R.D. wasn't good imo

The Kendrick joint was nice and yes, that Voices of Fire Gospel joint is nice too

It isn't about being on top of their game. There's a big difference in the quality from the time Pharrell dropped his first solo to now. That album had some highlights as did some of Hell Hath No Fury, but it was a noticeable dip in quality in comparison to before.

Being at the top of their game = dropping top notch quality music

Pharrell solo albums aren't his bread and butter

Pharrell works better behind the scenes as a writer, production duo with Chad, as a solo producer and as a one third of N.E.R.D. in a group

For whatever reason, Pharrell solo albums never connect.

But his work as a producer and writer is top notch elite

Does this mean he always drops music with great quality? No, of course not. But guess what? No one does.

Sometimes the music is good and sometimes it's not good.

Again, there's ebbs and flows with the music.

Absolutely. I think more people need to consider what's realistic in terms of "years without falling off or dropping duds" that's realistic of us to expect our favorite artists and producers to pull off.

IMHO if any artist or producer can give us any more than 2 legitimately classic albums, then that's basically legendary status. Everyone falls off and/or becomes inconsistent if you give them enough time. I think it's more important to look at the quality stuff they gave us when they were in their creative primes.

They all got a whole team when they started getting bigger and wanted more complex sounds. Dre, Timbaland, Pharrell and Chad, all of them. The 9th wonder type beat makers are the only ones sitting in a room by themselves with an mpc, keyboard and laptop

Everyone has a team to some extent but Kanye be having a crew of producers working alongside him

Timbaland did the drums for Stronger

Yep, and I think a lot of people on here would be surprised how many "bedroom beatmaker" style producers enlist co-production from other people too. 9th Wonder for example has way more beats than people realize where guys like E. Jones have played some keys, or added some sounds or textures here and there.

And that's where I feel he excelled. Much of Pharrell's solo production work sounds empty and the fuller sound felt more soulful even when it was eclectic and experimental.

This. I remember Kanye stans saying Kanye was the GOAT producer and downplaying Dre because Dre had a team of co-producers. And those arguments became more popular when MBDTF dropped even though those credits showed Kanye having multiple producers on every song.

Yup and Kanye really started branching out more for more help from producers post College Dropout album

When he started expanding his sound on Late Registration, he reached out to Jon Brion for his help and Jon co produced the majority of that album with him

And Just Blaze produced "Touch The Sky"

And Kanye has a whole team of producers versus Pharrell who probably just has a few engineers and some session players

I never knew Dre was downplayed, that’s about arranging not getting help. I personally don’t downplay having co producers. I’m sure making music with others is fun af. I love collaborations and features.
Kanye sound is now signature so he can use them to make quicker sketches for him. One is a general and the other borrows from going to music school for the gifted. Both get interesting results. Dre is definitely in this conversation.
