Kanye West finally does an interview (NY Times), and it's pretty fascinating

Insignificant posting from an insignificant poster
I agree with this. It almost feels like Kanye is trying to convince himself of the wild shyt he's saying. If you watch him in an interview he doesn't have the most confident look in his eye. He seems really insecure.

His insecurities are a gift and a curse.

A gift to the masses because he's always going to feel like his product isn't good enough and will strive for sonic excellence.

You have corny backpackers from cali that think his personae is a schtick of some kind (and it probably is --- but he's also a hypocrit... but who cares).

A mad man with something to say is more potent than an apathetic lemming who won't utter a sound.

At least kanye expresses his voice and opinion, irregardless of how crazy, outlandish and delusional he comes off - i commend that he puts his thoughts into words...

These californian back packers kill me.

Shiits wild patacky.

I dont even blame Kanye at this point ... ppl are fascinated with him...

Yeah, I mean….as much as I wanna be like "this nikka is outta control", it's the MEDIA that MADE him this way.

When you constantly follow someone around with cameras, when you treat someone like their every move is newsworthy, then yeah….don’t be shocked when the subject of such attention suddenly starts actin’ like it’s all about them.

It's like, welcome to your Frankenstein, except now you tryinta criticize the very monster YOU (the media) created.

If you've been following Kanye's career from the jump none of this comes as a surprise. I'm sure with some of the stuff he's trolling/ playing up to his character.

But Talib Kweli has spoken about how ambitious Kanye was. How he was talking about singles and videos for his second album - before the first was even finished. Another tale is how he'd stand up on tables in the stu and just start rapping before he got signed.

He's sane enough to make good and somewhat relatable music. But homie has BEEN on the cusp of crazy.

Yeah, Even I gotta disagree with this b/c you had guys like nas, talib kweli, mos def, and Common among others who were still rapping about social issues while getting spins on the radio and videos on TV and what not.

This was when ye was still producing for those acts.

The only difference between them and ye is that ye had a more BOLD and BRASH approach which garnered a lot more attention and hate in the process.

While they were all making that type of music, none of them had songs like "All Falls Down" or "Jesus Walks" in the Top 10 on the charts. These songs were played at a time when Lil' Jon's Crunk and G-Unit ruled radio. None of their songs were getting spins like that. The Talib songs that did get spins were produced by Kanye. Common had a huge a resurgence after College Dropout and Kanye helmed his comeback.

Common has 3 gold albums. 2 produced by Kanye.

I think had Lupe come a few years later he would be in a better position. When Lu came out it was Kanye, Pharrell and Outkast who didn't fit the norm but still pushed units. Pharrell's own group didn't push big numbers for that fact

You Steve Jobs now breh? :beli:

Kayne is a real smart dumb motherfukker. We all know he was in that slow class :yeshrug:

This idiot trying to compare himself to titans of industry like Ford, Hughes, Jobs.:stopitslime:

You make hip-pop music breh :beli:

Real talk Jay-Z is still way bigger than Kanye in every way imaginable. He even admitted he need Jay to be next to him on tour :sadcam:

okay and ? So what if he makes Hip Hop music.
Mozart and Miles Davis just made music, doesn't
stop them from being very important figures within
our culture.

Kanye isn't crazy or conflicted. He's self-aware. He understands celebrity and everything that comes with it. Instead of downplaying it or trying to run from it, he feeds it. Society treats celebrities like gods, so instead of being modest, Kanye feeds it by acting the role. He knows that he's reached a point where everything he does is going to be put under a microscope, so he's going to give you a show by doing what he loves doing: making music.

All of Kanye's antics up to this point have all paid off. He successfully trolled the media (and us to an extent) to the point where it's hard to decipher whether he's trolling or being real. He succeeded where others failed. Artists like Lady Gaga tried it, but the antics overshadowed the music. Kanye's antics work as promo and commercials for his music.

You guys can neg me to Bolivia. If the world had more Kanye's, it would be a better place..

I'd rather have someone call me a n*gger, tell me they hate me or I smell funny rather than smiling and lying in my face.

Ye wears his heart on his sleeve and lets you know where he stands. You can hate him but you have to respect him for that.

Nah, Nah, Lupe came out at the PERFECT time. He came out like 05/06 when he dropped "kick push" and was on "touch the sky". This was perfect timing b/c he definitely stood out amongst his peers who were either on some "lean with it rock with it", a "trap star" or they were some Mixtape NY rapper. Not to mention the attention H-town was getting. All you gotta do is look at the freshman 08 cover and compare lu against the other artists.

SO yeah Lupe came out at the right time b/c if he came out around lets say 08 or 09 he would've had more competition in his lane and he would not have stood out as much, even though he's a WAYYYY better lyricist than most rappers now

EDIT: I'd go out on a limb and say that Ye, Pharell, AND Lupe are partially responsible for the shift in rap.

But even When C. Dropout and Late Registration came out like you said, Lil Jon, G unit and snap music STILL dominated. Other than Lupe, there wasn't many new artists who were on the conscious tip or rapped about social issues.

IMO, Graduation and 808's Were the real game changers. :lawd:
