And double albums are only counted twice in the RIAA certification, not the actual units

IE how All Eyes on Me and Life After Death are certified diamond off "only" 5 million copies sold.

Yep! That’s how Outkast went Diamond so fast. Without physical copies artists can’t do this anymore though.

I haven't listened to the album yet, but the usual suspects are doing the same bytching and complaining so it looks like Kendrick dropped another dope project.

I know some people were projecting 400k in the first week, so this isn't far off the projections. Highest first-week sales of the year so far, most likely going to go platinum with no major hits. First studio album in five years and he's selling what he did in 2015? Again, Kendrick is a made man. I don't know why that has to be repeated.

You reach your commercial peak once and that's it. Kendrick had it five years ago, he doesn't need to do it again. And it's not just rap. Adele came back after six years and sold half of what 25 sold, without a monster hit and the album only being available in stores. But selling one million copies in 2021 is abnormal, so that's not a knock against her. Certain things will always factor into your sales.
I can agree with all of this. If you just compare it to the prior album, which is generally the most important information to determine whether an album flopped or not, it looks like a flop since it did 60% of what Damn did, but if you say that Damn was just an aberration, then it is on par with TPAB and thus not a flop.

Did I say anything about the album itself? I'm talking about the commercial performance, which has nothing to do with the quality. And Kendrick is apparently performing at the level someone of his caliber should be. I don't know why people think this album is a flop because it's not going to sell a million in the first week.

And as usual, people like you are complaining about the album so I'm sure it's going to be an entertaining listen.
The first week isn’t a flop but if this has like 70% drop in the second week with no songs becoming hits then it will be a flop overall

I really don’t understand why he gave us this shyt. Other than he’s completely out of touch.

Someone on here had the theory about the time and wanting to sound more experimental to meet the hype.

Damn wasn’t an aberration. It was a response to publics reception to TPAB.

That’s what he’s capable of if he drops music people want to hear and replay
That’s what he’s capable of if he abandons the style of music he typically employs and takes a more commercial/pop friendly approach.

No not typically. section 80/good Kidd don’t sound like TPAB.

TPAB was an experiment that didn’t work, he acknowledged that and came back out a better project. I don’t know what this new album is tho

Kendrick fans have failed him

why are you guys not supporting the album? shyt should of been cleared 500k by now :mjcry:

kendrick fans are supporting him. what give artists big sell numbers are casual fans. majority of them did not know he dropped an album. no lead single 2 weeks to a month before release. no video for the single. no promo tour etc. he doesnt really need a promo tour anymore but not doing pre marketing for the album is why he didnt do 450k. which makes sense because this is his last album under tde. idk if its his last with interscope or aftermath and he strictly going with pg lang either way the promo for this was lacking. love the album he has a hit with die hard but the bulk of the album isnt going to draw casuals to it only his die hard fans are going to love this album.

Spotify numbers show N95 is the most played song m. It literally doubled every song that’s on the second disc by more than 7 million plays. No song on the 2nd disc has more than 9 million plays.

N95 is the hit.

i feel like this album reception will be more kin to TPAB.

King Kunta and alright are the only songs with more than a 100 million on there. That’s shocking.

Can we please stop the “single” and “no marketing” narrative right now?

Kendrick creates PGLand website and announced he’s leaving TDE and that his new album will be coming soon, announced new flows coming soon on family ties, changed folders and announced the date of his album and the heart is coming, released the heart and so many people were watching it on YouTube, YouTube couldn’t keep up with the views and likes, so many people were watching it an error occurred and you couldn’t watch it. That’s the condensed version. Kendricks image is him being mysterious.

Thats his marketing strategy

if you take away bundles and physicals his numbers are basically the same with Damn.

The numbers he’s doing are great! There’s no need for the extras

He didn't acknowledge that. And I'd argue he's where he is rn in part due to that album getting him in spaces and places a rapper wouldn't normally be in. It was an amazing, important record that launched successful careers for multiple artists who played on it. Him going in another direction afterwards is what he said it was: not making the same album twice. Pre-Mr. Morale I would have said he got his art rap shyt out the way and could just do whatever he wants. I didn't expect him to do it again (just with a different sound).

In terms of sales it's basically what I predicted. Depends on the single...and he didn't have one. I think it'll end up closer to 350k given how steady the streams seem to be. We'll see. I think the team has to ask themselves whether not using the best label's machine for promo, not having a single, and not having physical copies was worth the "mystique" of not having anything leak. I don't think it was but end of the day I don't think Kendrick cares whether he does 330k or 400k.

Was Damn his most commercial/pop friendly/mainstream album to date?

Juice WRLD did 100k+ physical last year I believe.

If I’m not mistaken, BTS moved 600k+ physical units in 2020. Taylor Smith moved 280k+ that same year.

Kendrick did 300k+ physical on TPAB as well.

Not arguing about whether CDs are viable still. You can’t dismiss physical sales when an artist’s fanbase has proven they’ll show up.
BTS?
