How old are you? lol NOI + Pan Africanism in particular was a big reason for this (people choosing Muslim names or African names). You had a big thing with Baby Boomers changing their name when they got knowledge of self + Gen Xers being given those names because their parents were part of these movements during their pivotal (40s-50s).

Alot of NE culture is rooted in NOI teachings "Word is Bond", calling folks beloved, etc

I said didn't know Ameerah was one..
I know about the Muslim/NOI shyt I'm from jersey.
I just didn't know that we was technically out here wit Arab/muslim names and not "black" names until I was old enough and informed enough to make the connection wit Islam.
