Kobe would have given a younger Pippen that work too, just like he did in 98. People like to ignore Penny/Grant Hill used to give MJ and Pippen buckets all the time. MJ and Pip were both very good defenders but people they would not be shutting down the top offensive players that came in the league after them.
I agree with the basics of your point, and prime Kobe would have been a very tough cover for Pippen - I don't see Scottie shutting him down at all. But I'm not sure what you're talking about regarding '98.
These are Kobe's first 7 games against Pippen, from 1996-1999.
5-1-0 on 2-5 shooting (Bulls)
5-3-0 on 2-7 shooting (Bulls)
20-4-1 on 7-16 shooting (Bulls)
25-10-2 on 8-21 shooting (Rockets)
18-5-3 on 8-20 shooting (Rockets)
9-5-2 on 3-14 shooting (Rockets)
23-8-0 on 6-15 shooting (Blazers)
Now obviously Pippen didn't guard Kobe all of those games, he would have been marking Eddie Jones or Glen Rice some of the time. But whoever was guarding him, Kobe wasn't tearing into them. He wasn't playing at that level until 2000/2001.
(edit - forgot they met in the 1999 playoffs too. Kobe averaged 18-7-6 on 41% shooting that series. )
He had 6 title runs and a bunch of other deep playoff runs all guarding the best perimeter players on each team, he had hella miles plus a broke back.
Exactly. Post-1998 Pippen was like Lakers Artest. He could be your go-to defender for swingmen but he was NOT at the top of the league anymore or the kind of guy you wanted marking the quickest guards.
