Outside of Peterson and Talib. The rest played right in the heart of the Southlake Carroll era.
nah im not talking bout when southlake were at their peak with todd dodge running the spread. im talking bout when everybody in the state started copying them. that didn't start till after 2010. all those players graduated already.

This. The spread offense does not require good OL or DL play. Nor does it require a LB to learn how to play the run. The spread levels the talent between the teams and makes for high scoring, but lousy fundamentals.

With the monumental aggy collapse, about the only college team in Texas not to lose was Houston, by not playing. I don't count TCU over a Div 3 school a victory. I think it is soley on the emphasis of 7 on 7 at the high school level. The real fundamentals of blocking and tackling have almost disappeard because of this. It has absolutely killed the college game in this state. That's why Herman has to go out of state to find offensive linemen. It was a real pleasure to watch Alabama execute fundamental tackling and blocking last night -- that's still what wins football games. I get so tired of watching the repeated arm tacking by Texas and aggy. There are very few in the state of Texas that really know how to block. I think the college coaches in this state need to have a come to Jesus meeting with the high school coaches. Let's get back to playing the game of football.

pretty much what i've been saying for three years. i'm glad this is starting to get more attention. mac engel wrote an op-ed on this topic at the end of last season in the fwst. when herman was hired, my hope was that if he changed the philosophy at texas that the txhsfb coaches would follow (similar to how they all copied DKR's wishbone offense). i reached out eric nahlin about this, he didn't think that would happen.

@rantanamo what do you think? if you discuss this topic on any other texas site, they get hella sensitive about their precious friday night lights. but i honestly believe this is the root of the fall of the in-state college teams.

UT's two best players are from California and Australia. We've had to rely on two 5'11 DT's from SC and FL for multiple seasons. We're constantly having to reach out to o'linemen and linebackers from OOS because the in-state crop is mediocre. Something weird is happening...

they from a different era. before the "southlake effect" took over the state.

@hood b. goode i've been talking about this for 3 years. nobody plays defense on the high school level in this state anymore. :mjcry:

Breh dont overreact to this Maryland L
Harbaugh lost his first game vs utah too.

It takes time. Youll see the improvement by mid season.

I think its fine. The colleges are the issue. Not hiring good enough coaches, and not recruiting the top talent to stay in Texas for the most part.

I think this is where the lack of top notch offensive coaching has helped defenses in Florida.

Don't get it twisted schools in Florida try to do the same stuff as well. But its just not as crisp as the offenses do in Texas. This allows for a more physical brand of football to take over and more emphasis on those defensive players meaning mean and physical. You actually have a reason to be skilled because you can actually stop some of these guys.
This is a good point. Florida high schools try to play spread, but there very few QB's that are polished passers. As a result, offenses still have to use a physical running game to move the ball. Florida high school football can be a lot sloppier than Texas football, but the games are definitely physical.

If Herman keeps this class as he got the bulk of the best Texas players and it will be top 3. But nearly all of it are skill players. Only about four are LB's, dline and oline. Texas is havin to look oos for lineman.

Makes sense why they fought so hard to try & keep him

I knew they would fall off but I never thought it would be this soon and that they would be losing to one of their weak ass OOC opponents :dead:

baylor looking like smu after the death penalty, spent all that money on that shiny new stadium that was only built because of art briles filling the house

i gurantee if briles was coaching with the same roster as yesterday it would have been like 70-35

even worse baylor got rid of his son who at least was running the same offense

now they got this bum matt rhule whose trying to go the bill o'brien type route except baylor has zero sanctions or scholarships taking away :heh:
Y'all are forgetting that Baylor had a lot of attrition on the roster & in recruiting the last year & half of because of this scandal. Baylor wouldn't win 10 games even if Briles was coaching this roster.
