anyone down to re-start the convo?
i think the listening was underrated by myself. even tho i still choose minstrel, the listening is gold.
I'm always down to revisit this convo. I revisit it in my own head all the time.
To me it always comes down to the same thing. The Minstrel Show is the better album. Phonte truly started his reign as an elite rhymer (my opinion, but a lot of people agree), Pooh stepped it up big time on there. Their songs were more polished. 9th Wonder refined his sound and sharpened it up a little bit. It was everything that a 2nd album should be. They didn't try to reinvent the wheel, or do something other than what people loved them for. But they elevated the beats and the rhymes.
All that being said, there was something about The Listening that was special, as corny as it sounds. They recorded it in Cesar Comanche's apartment, and they'd have to re-do takes if someone's phone went off, or if someone ran down the hall really loud. The speakers didn't even pan. So 9th would have to record, then burn a CD, then they'd play it in the car, and if something needed to be panned to the left or right, 9th would just take a guess at it, and burn a CD, rinse/repeat until they got it right.
That whole album was made on on a PC with Fruity Loops and then Cool Edit, by some young guys from the South that were trying to compete with the Rawkus acts of the world. Little Brother almost wasn't even a group. They became a group after recording Speed when Median didn't show up, and Pooh came instead.
It's less polished, but it's just as classic. I'm gonna take the easy route and say that they're even. They're both classic albums that I have many memories to.
