I have never said $7.25 is a cruel and inhuman wage :francis: You can own a home down here on that kind of income.

And yes, getting as many people off and as far above MW as possible is a much better idea than raising MW. Raising MW does jack shyt to ensure those people's job security and general level of empowerment. Having a job that isn't an economic condition away from automation or outsourcing is a big source of economic security which goes a long way.

Lets see the math on the, pleighboi.

No one is getting a mortgage on $7.25 an hour.

Just because a job may become automated it's a justification for paying MW? Time to rethink paying doctors and and just about any profession I guess.

I like the singling out of "living wage advocates", as if paying people living wages is some sort of "special interest" issue.

One thing I don't understand about these people is that they prophesy all this doom and gloom if we actually have decent wages...while ignoring that MOST wealthy countries in the world have far higher low-end wages than we do.and yet the poor in those countries are far better off than ours are...so it's obviously possible.

Hell, our OWN minimum wage was twice as high (relative to prices) fifty years ago as it is today. The whole Reagan revolution and the 30 years that have followed fukked this country over economically, and uneducated morons are too short-sighted to imagine there's any other way.

Bzzzt, the existence of fast food injuries doesn't mean they are higher than those of garbage workers.

There is no listing for 'garbage workers' in that pdf.

Closest I could find would be something along the lines of local government and/or transportation which would encompass a lot more than the workers who throw cans on the back of the trucks.

Also, as has been stated, there's people that would kill to get a job working for a sanitation company around my way.

Gladly. I don't have to hide behind codewords like "fairness".

$7.25 * 2080hrs/yr = $15,080

How Much House Can I Afford - Home Affordability Calculator | Zillow <---- you can afford a $58K home w/zero down at a monthly payment of $450/mo

Not far off NYC's low income housing cost to income ratio....

This is what kind of home that gets you down here. Keep in mind these are single family homes, not condos (which have maintenance fees)

So yea, you can definitely own a home here making minimum wage. I know people who do it. MW is also within the realm of a lot of benefits and entitlements too.

Doctors aren't calling for more pay, doctors aren't immediately replaceable, etc. etc. If anything technology will enable doctors to do more, as it always has.

0% down and you magically have no debt? FHA doesn't even do that.

those are rentals in NY and there are hundreds of thousands of applicants. You would be spending a quarter of your monthly income just on rent Throw in electric, gas, and cable and you're spending half. Not sure if that takes into account taxes. This is sustainable and not a issue though. Those houses look in need of a lot of love and a person on MW would get wiped out quickly and fall behind. Lets not even wander into property taxes and school taxes.

I've paid a plumber 2k in the last two weeks. I did a roof last year and it ran around 12k.

No gloom and doom. Just looking to see what problems MW would solve. OK, let's bump MW up to $15/hr for example. Your healthcare is still subsidized and depending on your household situation you may still be eligible for SNAP and housing assistance too. You're probably not saving much if anything... def not paying for your kids college, prob dont live in an area with good school districts either. So there's a whole laundry list of issues I'd rather see addressed first, gladly paid for by big business, than an arbitrary minimum wage that does nothing to solve them. Nobody is retiring on $15/hr.

You asked, I gave you answers, you move the goalposts. Look at the surprise on my face :comeon:

A quarter of income on housing is not unreasonable. Someone making $48K would be paying $1000/mo. High but not impossible. And that calculator includes taxes, insurance, and PMI. Up by you taxes prob nuke that but guess what, households making 5, 10, 15x MW can't afford to buy property there either. But my point still stands.... numerically one can afford a home on MW. If your debts and credit are good a bank would probably approve that loan :yeshrug:
